I heard that the original release of FF1 has some glitches and certain spells don't work as a result. Does the bundled re- release fix any of those bugs? I know there's some graphical changes.

I am pretty sure it has no mechanical changes for either game, only the graphical changes included in the international version to avoid licensing issues

Play the PS1 version. It's pretty much the same game with some minor updates.

it's easily the hardest part of the game for me.

1) learn the map so you don't fall into the wrong holes
2) clear the game in at least 2 sweeps: get a few chests on the first sweep, warp out, save, get the remaining chests and the exit on the next phase
3) More than one Dark Wizard spawns? RUN THE FUCK WAY

so it takes proper planning and luck. If Dark Wizards ambushes you, you're fucked anyway
