I have potentially two on the way from China, time will tell if they actually arrive. Nothing fancy, just a green SF2000 and a RetroMini.

Try to keep the Miyoo hoarder shaming to a minimum even though it works. Continue Analogue Pocket shaming as usual.

Two neat and helpful links from the last thread;

You can take most android phones and remove a lot of the stock software from it: google playstore, youtube, facebook, carrier apps, samsung/lg/sprint/account using a software called Universal Android Debloater.

You'll want to install the F-droid/Droidify Apk first. This will give you an alternative app store front. You can also learn about Aurora Store and micro g services to get google apps without a google account necessary.Careful: you'll want to install a new launcher or keyboard app first before removing the stock launcher or keyboard if you choose)

Grab retroarch from droidify along with any other emulators desired.

Then plug in your phone with usb and fire up the universal android debloater after installing it on windows or linux or whatever.

You will notice a tab that says recommended at the top. These are all the safe to debloat software/apps-
Click this tab and you can choose advanced, expert, unsafe. These are the levels of "safe to remove" apps and firmware. (If you know what youre doing you can uninstall more than the recommend but READ THE NOTES ON WHAT YOU DISABLE FIRST)Go through and strip out all that you dont want. This will pump your battery life UP and reduce cpu/gpu loads, and once youre all finished. Hit reboot(refresh icon) in the debloater gui and unplug your phone after it starts up. This is great for making a game centric device as well as everyday phone use for increasing the life and customization of your phone.

I'm trying to think but I honestly can't think of any examples. Maybe if you wanted to push it then certain Ayaneo devices when they end up heavily discounted, maybe the ROG Ally assuming that a cheaper model is in the works, maybe the regular Loki model assuming it even ships this year, let alone next year.
And again these are all huge "maybes". Valve can take the financial hit because they have Steam that makes them loads o money and parts can get cheaper over time, but these other chinkheld companies really need their own gimmicks like higher resolutions/refresh rate screens to feel like they have to stand out, even if certain aspects will wreck havoc on the device's already small battery life.

Speaking of Ayaneo I kind of want to get the Air since they're selling them for 30% off, but again the small battery life compared to the Air Plus ones is disappointing. Plus I'm not sure how limiting 8GB of RAM will be for emulation.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Loki Max outperforms it, the 6800U is very capable. But the problem with AYN is that it seems like it takes them forever to ship out their products, dating as far back as the Odin. Plus there's also quite a few 6800u handhelds, though of course bear in mind that cost will be a main deal breaker for now.
For $500-600 though you could probably get a really capable laptop that should have no issues with retro emulation. Like a year ago I got a ideaPad 3 with a 5500u for $600 Canadian maybe? Its only gotten cheaper last I checked and converted to USD that'll go for even less, that should give you a rough indication of where you can go up.

The audio quality is garbage and it's ONLY good for GBA and NES games to be honest, but this RetroMini is gonna be my new Mother 3 machine.

And the case Anbernic sent with the Retro Arcade Mini wasn't even for the RetroMini, I still have no idea what device it's meant for. The RetroMini, despite being miniUSB, came with a USB-C cable. Aw well, I get what I pay for.

There are a bunch of other neat vertical handhelds like RS67, RS77, AN08, and M3S. The rest are mostly Famiclones sadly, but they are not nearly as bad as you would be led to believe.

I realize no one FUCKING asked, but gonna give my two cents on the X28 after playing with it for a week now:
>if you're on the fence on buying one like I was, just fucking do it. this is my favorite handheld I've owned to date
>seems smaller in person than I was expecting, in a good way
>it's basically the exact same weight as a RG505, yet feels a bit lighter. Suppose that's due to the ergonomics and how it rests in the hands?
>speaking of, the ergonomics are absolutely killer. not too big or too small, doesn't fill my hands too much or too little, it just werks and leaves a great first impression
>screen really is the perfect size for me. speaking as someone who wanted something larger than my 4.7" RP3+, but smaller than my 7" Deck. Get an effective 4.5" display area for 4:3 content, and I think it's really great.
>additionally, the quality of the screen is really awesome and exceeded my already high expectations. The RP3+ screen does have an edge on saturation and brightness, but the saturation and brightness is still excellent here. For comparison to another T618 device, I'd say the brightness is better than the RG505's, although that one still has a slight saturation advantage like the RP3 because OLED. One thing this screen absolutely creams the RP3+ screen on though is clarity, all the little details just pop so much better here.
>plastic has a nice textured feel to it, and smudging/fingerprints is thankfully not a thing here coming off the nightmare that was the black RP2+ (shame because that was a really attractive black). the screen does get annoyingly smudgy, though.
>speakers are fantastic. audio quality is not quite as good as the Deck's, but better than the RP3+'s, RG505's, and Win600's which are already quite great. Front firing and it really throws the audio at you, good bass, and it actually gets louder than the Deck at max volume. If you want a t618 with some bass, this is the one hands down.

>> No.10026493

>>10026491
>call me crazy, but I actually think the android image on this thing is good. I actually like it better than the RP3+'s, and DEFINITY better than the RG505's. By default it defaults to a kind of... I don't know, console'y home launcher? It looks weird at first, but after get using to it and customizing it a bit, I definitely prefer it to the default Android home launcher that you get on other Android devices (although you can also switch to that as well). That said, I ended up just setting Daijisho as my default home since I can do everything from there anyways.
>having dedicated "Recents", Back, and Home buttons is seriously awesome. In combination with this particular android image, I basically almost never have to actually touch the screen, and navigation ends up being super fast to whatever I want.
>d-pad is not what I was expecting and generally really weird, but in a good way. When I first started using it, it seemed a little mushy, but it has become more tactile and springy after breaking in. The pivot from center is really good and begins actuating immediately. The relative thinness of the d-pad is something I thought I wouldn't like and would simply put up with, but it actually makes my inputs feel more accurate and, strangely enough, also makes it really easy to hit diagonals precisely and comfortably when I want. That said, no, I am 100% not getting any false diagonals on this thing and don't know how you could even manage that. This is a supremely precise yet flexible d-pad above all else. I've been playing a handful of shmups, which is where I tend to REALLY notice and get frustrated by false diagonals, but it's just not happening. It's really good for shmups and fighters. With all that said, it's not quite as "fun" to press as the one on the RK2023.

>> No.10026498

>>10026493
>the face buttons are like if the ones on the Deck and RP3+ had a baby. it's uncanny how perfect of a blend they are of those device's buttons. Very competent and easy to use buttons, they're just good. Similar to the d-pad though, they aren't as "fun" to press as the ones on the RK2023. Those are seriously the best face buttons on any handheld.
>probably what exceeded my expectations the most are the shoulder buttons. a while back, I asked an anon on here how tough they are to press compared to the RP3's and he said they're a little tougher but not bad. I was okay with that, but on mine they're noticably softer to press than on my RP3+'s. I don't know if that's down to button-lotto on the RP3+, X28, or both, but regardless that's my experience and they're phenomenal. The shape, size, and angling of the shoulder buttons also just make them super easy and comfortable to use + rest your fingers on. I don't know if it's just me or what, but on the RP3 I always had trouble using both L1/R1 and L2/R2 in games. I basically had to position my hands to use either the front row or back row of buttons primarily, with the result being the other row would basically be off-limits during execution-heavy action segments. I had a somewhat similar experience with the Deck shoulder buttons, except there it was more like I could only use the triggers comfortably and reliably. god forbid something ever needed the L1 button pressed in a timely manner. But yeah, back to the x28, these are honest to god the best digital shoulder buttons I've used on any device, not just handhelds, and it really makes me want to play games that use them a lot.
>you already know what the sticks feel like, so I'll just say the positioning in tandem with the ergonomics make them feel really good and comfortable to use, even in combination with the shoulder buttons.

>> No.10026504

>>10026498
>this thing has an intangible quality to it that makes me want to pick it up and play video games on it. Aside from the Vita, this has actually never happened to me with a handheld. 16-bit 2D games, bigscreen 3D games, smallscreen handheld games, shmups, racing, etc, it doesn't matter. They're all simply a great experience on this screen + controls + ergonomics.

Overall, 10/10 Powchaddy have created a fucking masterpiece with this one. I only really have two beefs with it:
>only black is boring. my transparent blue RP3+ looks so much sexier in comparison

The excellent shoulder buttons, ergonomics, and screen size leave me really wanting to play something like Jet Set Radio on this thing, but it requires analog precision that it just doesn't offer. Supposedly PK is working on an update for this as-of a week ago, so hopefully that will come soon.

The brightness is actually very good. Definitely not as bright at max as the fucking RP3+ at max, but also definitely brighter than the RG505 at max. I think a good approximation is the Steam Deck's max brightness, it's dead on side-by-side. Sold my Analogue Pocket, the screen is really nice but it's too heavy, I'm also not sure what's with the button placement because my hands were tired after an hour of gameplay which doesn't happen with any other handheld, the UX to get roms running is also ass, if they want to provide a premium experience this shit needs to be more drag and drop, no having to fuck around with software made by literally whos. Probably the thing that annoyed me the most was the lack of display modes even in GBC/GBA roms, it's pretty much one of the biggest selling points and they still haven't provided a way to apply that shit to roms? in true retroid fashion it’s possible they put in one of the newer better rock chip soc’s soon and rerelease it to make use of the cooling, they usually milk the same chip twice (rp2+ the same as the rp3, rp3+ the same as the rpf) so we’re due for more plebbitors to rage that “ACK I SHOULDVE WAITED HOW COULD I HAVE KNOWN THEYD DO THE CHINKHELD CLASSIC OF RELEASING A NEW ONE”

Is the Win600 really that bad? I'm on the lookout for a "budget" x86 device as a companion to the Steam Deck, which I like but it can be a bit bulky with its travel case, plus its annoying trying to get some GOG games to play nice with it. Sometimes they don't boot up at all like Konami's PC ports of SH4/MGS1, other times they work but the controls are finicky like for Powerslave Exhumed/Quake Enhanced. I'm not looking for a replacement device, just a companion for lower end retro/indie games.
I'm just torn between maybe grabbing the 3020e model or the Aya Neo Air 8gb because I hear with the Win600 you can at least upgrade the RAM on top of the SSD. Plus the base Air is on sale while the new "Air Plus" really doesn't seem that budget.

A tablet set up it's all well and good but it's not exactly portable. If you can't put a handheld inside a pocket under normal conditions it's not fucking portable.
>realistically there isnt a chink device that is going to replace my gaming pc or laptop
These devices aren't supposed to replace a gaming PC, laptop, or even a mainline console, they're supposed to be supplementary devices to your main gaming device of choice like the GameBoy to the NES or the Game gear to the Genesis.

in case anyone else is looking to pull the trigger on one of these, chinkdropship app temu has a bunch of first-time buyer incentives that made my total 55 bucks shipped for picrel

i bought a v2 miyoo mini in february for 85 shipped that i never touch cause it’s designed for absolute manlets/chodettes (coming from a 120lb twink) so i was considering the plus, just didn’t pull the trigger until i saw what the total came out to messing around on the app

i don’t know how reputable the seller is, but they have confirmed purchases and this comes with a proper miyoo-branded carrying case (and not that ugly-ass one with the weird contrast zipper), so it’s a legitimate deal price-wise

had no intentions of impulse-buying it but really liked the look of all-black ones with those sakurarm buttons and i did want to see if the plus’s size increase made it more useable

purchased a 256gb scamsung microsd as a random deal on amazon recently for 15 bucks too so i guess it’s going in this thing since i don’t like the idea of carrying my new 3ds xl around even though i just updated its cfw to check out hshop (was running luma 6.6 and it’s apparently on 12.1 now kek)

Thanks for the reply anon. I guess I'll settle for the Air then if the weight/comfort ends up being an issue. Its honestly crazy though that Valve and Anbernic are basically the only two companies that have any sort of budget x86 handhelds to date. I know companies have to break even somehow which is why they go for high-end models to sell at premium price tags, but this really feels like an untapped market.

I gave my PSP to a friend in maybe 2012. I kind of want one again, primarily for PS1 games and a few PSP games.
Is there any point in getting a 1000 or a 2000 instead of a 3000? There doesn't seem to be, but I thought I'd ask. Although now that I type that out loud, I remember there being some really nice final fantasy themed PSP consoles. I might look into those first.

You should avoid a 1000 because they have less RAM. 2000 and 3000 have different screens, but some argue that the 3000 screen is worse. Seems subjective. The PSP Go is also an option, but it is less ergonomic and you need to pop the back off to install a SD card reader and any time you want to pull the SD card out (which isn't really necessary anyway).

I realize this is probably not true and is just me misremembering, but one advantage that I feel like the PSP 1000 models have is that they're a fair amount larger than the 2000/3000 revisions and are a tiny bit thicker in comparison. Of course the trade off is that they have less RAM like >>10032074 said, and from my experience back in high school the PSP 1000 model had a fair amount of ghosting issues with its screen. There's also the fact that the PSP 1000 does not include video output, which is more of a niche scenario if your TV does not have component outputs or if you don't own an upscaler. But if you wanted to play PSP games on your TV without needing a Vita TV or resorting to emulation, that's just one thing you wont have access to.

I'm sure it's a thrill if you're really into modding hardware, and it had a practical use several years ago, but not so much now.
You get maybe 20 minutes of battery power if you want to keep it portable, and the Wii is pretty underpowered compared to even moderately affordable dedicated emulator heandhelds. Hell, at the $150 range (less than you'd spend on one of these kits), you can play most GameCube games anyway.

Good to know. Yes, the original PSP models were thicker and a bit heavier, I remember that.
I did change my mind on those limited edition PSPs, however - the black look is so iconic to me, and all those FF themed console releases are grey/silver/white. I will most likely try to pick up a cosmetically attractive piano black 3000 from an asian man. Region free in any case (except for UMD movies).

2000 is the sweet spot, imo.
Additional RAM and better screen compared to the 1000.
Can create and use Pandora's batteries in case of a brick, whereas the 3000 not only can't create them but can't use them without additional hardware and only prior to a certain revision (while a brick is unlikely, I've lost a late revision 3000 to it).
Better form factor than the Go. Plus UMD compatibility or additional space for a big battery mod.

all of the phat 1000s advantages are niche today, just get whatever you want. I recommend a 2000 or 3000
pros:
>most premium form factor, just look at how cheap the brite's plastic door is to the phat's metal interior
>only PSP with an IR blaster, TV remote homebrews will only work on this
>can be used as a controller for the CD-i
>some old accessories like docks only work on the 1000
>can create pandora batteries, still a great tool to unbrick psps
>only psp with native support for 1.50 homebrew, all other psps require plugins
>1000 and early 2000 slims are the only ones that support cIPL permanent CFW, the rest need Infinity
>currently the only PSP with IPS screen mod kits

NAND is also really cheap right now so this doesn't make sense unless it's a scheme to get higher profit margins by trying to get people to upgrade. Is it really worth it to piss your customer off like this to get a small amount of people to upgrade or eat the cost of cheap SSDs yourself? Man what a shitshow.

>>10034747
I personally think the regular Loki is not competitive enough with what people want which is basically to be Steam Deck "at home". And I think most people aren't looking for it to install Steam OS to do that. Mostly, people will want it for emulation. But you don't need all that power, the Loki Mini (Pro) machines are what everyone should be looking at. It should be basically better than Win600 price but can emulate basically similarly to the Steam Deck due to the CPU configuration being the same and the only cutback being 1/4 of the Steam Deck's graphic cores which shouldn't matter that much. That still has a potential to surprise and delight people IMO. But Ayn might not be the first to market with something like that and the cancellation of SKUs would worry me that they can't deliver.

GBA can play GBA games.
Ambient light needed, or you can get an SP. Alternatively drop a new screen in with a bit of DIY. GBA flashcarts are good, gb emulation on them is fine but if you want decent gbc you should use a game boy specific flashcart.
Though cheapest way to natively play the library would be a DS. I have most of their handhelds and most modded in some way but still tend to play gba on 3DS.
That said the gba is comfy to hold and I use it mostly with the game boy player (GCI) on gamecube as a controller.

Forgot to mention SP. 001 (frontlit) will be much cheaper than the 101 backlit model. The frontlit screen is cope, drop in screens should be cheaper than an original backlit.
It's very pocketable due to its size and perfect for actual handheld use. Size and comfort annoys some but I find it fine with my gorilla hands for couple hour sessions. I mostly use it for game boy games and short pick up and play sessions like on a train.

God I’ve been living under a rock. I used to own a PS Vita specifically to play old PS1 and PSP games. Now I see there’s such a big world of emulation it’s like I went forward in time lmao

I wish I still had my Vita. Reading this thread gives me conflicting advice, some folks say just use a 3DS or Vita/PSP, and others say the chink shit is better. Sadly 3DS and Ps Vita are not cheap now. The 3DS especially. I remember almost buying one years ago for $250 new but thought nah it’ll go down soon. So much for that.

Kind of surprised that with all these emulation handhelds there hasn't been a wave of fast but inaccurate emulators created for running on these low powered devices, I get that primarily for the people who write emulators do it because they want accuracy for completion sake, the challenge, the correctness of the emulation, etc, but stuff like UltraHLE had N64 running at full speed (apparently) on Pentium IIs while stuff like Mupen will struggle on these handhelds with much more power.

Basically, it would be soulless and basically worthless from an emulation perspective, but it'd be really useful for these handhelds to not be so dependent on ports of PC accuracy-oriented emulators.

There are though? On the RP3+, they made their own Dolphin for Handheld and on other T618 devices, you use the MMJR or MMJR2 build to squeeze out every extra fps you can. And even going back, on older devices that struggled with SNES and GBA you had emulators like PocketSNES and gpsp or regba to squeeze some better performance.

Im close to giving up anons. I really like the idea of a retro/lofi handheld system to emulate games and run some simple pc ones (like rpg maker games), but in execution I don't see a single product I think I would be happy to spend my money on, besides maybe the steam deck but that is way overpowered and out of my price range. I also don't know how comfortable it would actually be to use. There are a lot of devices that I think are close to being great products, hindered by one or more issues that I think would ruin it for me. External controllers for phones solve a lot of problems but on a fundamental level I just kind of hate them. As much as I am interested in using them for gaming, I also just enjoy cool pieces of tech, and a bluetooth controller that my phone straps into is simply not cool tech. Imo its cringe tech, but my intent is not to cause an argument. Honestly DIYing my own console is probably my best bet for getting something I like, but I have 0 tools or experience doing that so I think thats out of the question too.

Anyways, there was no point to that post. Just venting some of my frustrations after watching a ton of videos about handhelds in the past few days.

Well, I wouldn't say they were major, but I also wouldn't say they are minor. Ill say though that they are deal breakers, since how bad they are is a matter of perspective; if you even think they are a problem in the first place. For instance, I think most of the screens are too small. I get that these are meant to be portable, but I really don't want something smaller than my phone screen, and my phone isn't a plus size model or anything. But a 4-5 inch screen is too small. I also want a screen ratio fit for the psp because vertical bars are fine but horizontal bars are a problem for me. There are other issues, but those are common ones. Like I said every device I've come across I have some problem with.

The closest to perfect device IMO is the Anbernic RG353. However, as I mentioned. Its too small, and the aspect ratio is wrong. Increase the size of the entire device by 50-100%, fix the aspect ratio, and spread out the controls a tiny bit, and it would basically be a perfect device. I think they could do a bit of work to redesign the shape to be more ergonomic, but really I think this is the best right now. At least, the best of the devices at a reasonable price. (The gpd win 4 looks like almost the perfect device but I refuse to buy a windows handheld. Also way outside my budget)

So I kind of expect there to be shit QC and fingers crossed I get a good one and don't need to go back and forth replacing them until I get a good one, but the RG351 I had previously had a serious design defect that, IIRC, was that the hardware for detecting the battery level was wrong as massively overstated how much charge was left, where 50% was actually like 10% and below that it would just start crashing, the controller didn't work (which was also basically just an internal USB gamepad)
because it essentially had no power to operate with.

As long as the RG353M isn't broken by design flaws, I'm happy enough because I did like the software. Also
>or the fact that I felt like its metal body was too premium & expensive and I needed a case to protect it
as a criticism sounds a lot like autism, so grain of salt on the 'weird manufacturing defects'.

I'm satisfied with the 353V, just can't recommend it because it's overpriced, its Android side is flawed and fixing it seems awfully low on the chinkommunity's priority list. Linux is fine with ArkOS though, if some ports like SRB2 Kart just don't work and the battery metrics are way off. Also needs tape on the d-pad, but that's every chinkheld apparently. Eyeing the X28 for systems it can't handle proper like DC and N64, but not entirely convinced its shortcomings will get fixed either.

>>10038660
On paper the x28 seems nice, but upon watching and reading reviews it seems like the dpad and the analog sticks are pretty poor, with the dpad registering unwanted diagonals often, and the analog sticks not having much if any nuance to how hard you are pressing them. Maybe not a problem on all titles, but will cause enough problems that I know I would regret my purchase.

Off the top of my head I don't know what I disliked about the Ayn Odin Lite. I know I haven't looked at this lite model specifically, but I also thought this ran Windows so it's probably worth a second look. Personally I hate uneven analog sticks, but if its a good enough product I can probably overlook it. $200 is like the absolute peak of my budget too, so at $199 for the base model from their website it just barely squeezes in.

>>10038704
>Also needs tape on the d-pad
Is this to prevent from accidental diagonals? I was just reading about them. Linux is my preference for a handheld anyways, though android is second. I imagine the amount of work that would need to be done to make android an enjoyable experience, even on a device like that, is probably time consuming. The plus side of android though, especially for a small device, is that I bet setting up the system to also be a music player is trivial. I think it would also be simple enough for linux, but android has the bluetooth button right in the pulldown menu. Just play around with some stuff so your music program keeps playing while the device is in "sleep" and you're good to go.

I can personally verify the false diagonals on d-pad thing is complete bullshit, but the cardinal snapping on the analog sticks is unfortunately very real. Supposedly Powkiddy is sending a x28 to the GammaOS dev, so if that all works out and ends with the analogs being fixed, I'd recommend giving it another consideration.

As for the Odin, unfortunately only the Base/Pro runs Windows (very shittily). The Lite is still one to get imo for superior wifi and battery life, but yeah I feel you on the uneven analog hate.

Yeah, tape for diagonals. Android on 353V ships with a lot of emulators installed, some cracked, some in chinese, but all outdated and with no controller friendly launcher like Daijisho or a Store for that matter, so you're pretty much setting up everything by hand anyway. Then you're required to install Play Services for some native games to run, which hinders performance on higher end emulation like N64 that performs better on Android. On the bright side, I accidentally left it on last night and it only drained 7% on idle, idling on EmulationStation in Linux eats more battery.

And then there's the paywalled custom Android 12 on some Patreon that's broken on recent v2 screen units and the guy made no attempt to warn his paypiggies about it. While things are all chewed and spoonfed for 35XX and Mini, you actually have to do some digging (and unfortunately discording) for the 353V.

I even specifically played A Plumber for All Seasons as soon as I got the thing and I have not had any trouble throwing koopa shells in the air like he mentioned in the review. The analog sticks do snap too hard to the cardinal directions though, it hasn't bothered me while playing stuff like MKDS but it's still a clear flaw that needs to be fixed. Also needs to be mentioned that the L2/R2 do work with Android apps now after the latest firmware.

I'm not quite sure if it even requires that much tinkering. You can grab a third party dock off Amazon which has support for additional USB A hubs and use any wired/wireless mouses on it, and just plug it into any monitor with HDMI output. And all it takes is just holding down the power button for a bit and you can switch to the desktop mode with ease.
I guess if you mean getting used to Linux and setting everything up then there is a bit of a learning curve, but it'll work in a fix since it should be enough for some light web browsing and productivity.
