I let my dad throw out my original NES when it started showing cart connection issues. He opened it up and couldn't figure out the issue and told me he would buy me a new NES if we threw this one out. As a kid i stupidly said ok and he got me a new system that xmas, but i will be haunted until the day i die about letting a perfectly salvageable system being tossed. I now have a Sharp NES, a top loader, a FamicomBox and multiple other fami models and about 10 other regular systems including the replacement. I'm a coomlector. At least when it comes to consoles.
I'll buy a console, clean it up, get it modded for RGB if it needs it, buy the corresponding flash cart, play it for a little, and then leave it in it's own plastic storage tub. If it's a disc based console, I'll get two. One to install an ODE in, and the other I'll keep it's disc drive intact.
It's got to the point where' I'm looking at collecting D-list consoles, like the Apple Pippin and the Game.Com. I don't think I'll ever get into 80's home computers, but I also used to think I'd never buy a Jaguar or a CD-i.

Fair enough. You stand in an open field and plug at each other until either you and your companions or the enemy dies. Your stats dictate how much damage your fists and weapons do. Since the enemies don't scale with you like the in Bethesda games, if you wander into a high level area you will get slaughtered.
Once you have either Marcus or Goris the combat becomes piss easy. They tear through anything that isn't Enclave

I love RPGs but they bore me too. I just play them when I'm in a mood to be relaxed. Right after work, right before bed, when I'm sick (I always play Final Fantasy when I'm sick, it's my chicken soup).
I also will only play an RPG every day if I'm obsessed with it. Otherwise, I just play them once a week or so. I kinda treat it like I'm sitting down for an episode of a good TV show. The time away helps them feel fresh for longer.
Another thing I do is adjust how I play to make sure I'm having fun. It's way better to have fun and lose than win and be bored out of your skull. Most of the time a playthrough ends when you get bored, not when you get stuck, so your enthusiasm is essentially your life bar.
I recently finished FFX for the first time and I was feeling the slog too. I forced my way through the last two dungeons by spamming the ability that makes your whole party run away at once and managed to clutch out a win on the final boss by abusing all the consumables I'd been saving. It was very quick and intense, and I really enjoyed it. I'm sure I could have won more elegantly if I hadn't rushed through so much, but I found a solution that was fun for me. That's what's important.
RPGs are less like an arcade game and more like a Lego set. You can follow all the instructions and win the "right" way, but if you're bored or want to do your own thing you can design your own solution. That's why they're great.

Your initial post, this one >>10105423, is still profoundly moronic. Not that anon, but the Croc Cap was a popular discussion topic when the game was current, same with the Tsuchinoko. You might not know where or how to get them (the tsuchinoko was especially horseshit), but you'd probably heard of them.
That said, it's understandable that new players wouldn't have that knowledge. And I wouldn't call them "not fans" just because they hadn't played in that 1-2 year span of time.
