These things were brutal in Diablo 1 if you were playing a warrior; all they would do was shoot magic at you from off the screen and run away when you tried to engage them in melee. It's a puzzle room where if you don't land every shot you're forced to stand around and die so you can grind weapon energy. Previous bosses were vulnerable to the buster and encouraged experimentation, but here it will kill you. Aside from the final boss, which can be killed with half your weapon energy to spare, this never comes up again. It's pretty bad design.

The Omega Missiles from Super Robot Taisen Compact 3. On certain maps (most of them, it feels like), a nuclear missile spawns at the edge of the area after a few turns, and goes after the nearest target. They self-destruct on whatever unit they manage to make it to, and generally destroy weaker units in one hit. A few turns later, another one appears. Repeat. Why they would do something like this is beyond me; none of the other games have such an annoying mechanic.

those guys are so awesome in Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts

they probably have pretty simple programming, like everything would in a SNES game, but somehow they're able to show real personality, and follow you through whole stages while consistently avoiding your attacks, and occasionally hide in a floor or ceiling and do a little dance to taunt you--all before finally diving at you unexpectedly to finish you off

not that I can't kill them because really it's very easy if you have the gold armor, regardless of your weapon; but while you're still learning the game they are super-cool, a triumph of emergent gaming

Note that this only goes for hard mode. Normally they aren't anything special, but on hardmode it's a literal case of "I can't get past the first 50 pixels on this stage with unlimited continues".

Add to that the fact that you fight like 7 of these in a row the first thing you do.
