I thought I would be fine without one because it was just going to be arcade games and fighters and shit like that. Then I got Resident Evil and realized I pretty much had to have one or there was no point.

In retrospect, selling these things without a memory card of some kind out of the box was a borderline scam. Yeah, technically the console worked without them but considering save states had been a common thing since the NES days that's a hell of an omission. The thing was basically useless for 90% of games until you coughed up the extra dough for a memory card. What a fucking shakedown that was

Arcade's Revenge has an absolute BANGER of an OST... but that's about all it has. I mean, I guess it controls well, and looks fine... and that's why it's so much of a pain, it gets all of the fundamentals of a good video game right! All they had to do is, well, NOT FUCK IT UP... but this is LJN, so it's no wonder that they did just that, by messing up all design decisions possible, which is a real shame...

I mean, not only are most levels filled with a ton of garbage in them that makes them not fun to navigate, the lack of FUCKING CONTINUES makes this borderline unplayable unless you just cheat.

ALL they had to do was put checkpoints on levels and give players unlimited continues, it would be hard anyways, but a lot more fair and even fun in a way... as it is, it's just a complete disaster...

Curiously, another retro Marvel game.
Completely different from the arcade version, this was an action platformer. Not necessarily a bad game, but it's just a bit too long to start from scratch each time. Iron Man and Vision being "kidnapped" and thus unplayable was also disappointing.

Pretty much my friends and I. Each one of us got good at different levels (I did Storm's), we could beat them without ever dying. All good until Cyclops, no matter how many times we tried, those damn minecarts fucked us over. I think we got to finish the first stage, but never the second one.

It has the standard 'we gave it to playtesters for a weekend' QA feel that LJN was kinda known for. But I feel like LJN was making some improvements as a publisher before they sold out to Acclaim. Arcades Revenge doesn't really feel bad to play, it has a great soundtrack. But the game design feels chaotic. Game is really hard.

From LJN's perspective there was no need to put much effort into the game because the name recognition of the IP sold it for them. If your game is an original creation you need to convince people to buy it through positive buzz and word of mouth. If it has Spider-Man on it you just put it out there and wait for people's moms to buy it because their kid likes Spider-Man.

Of course it was the same for all licensed properties for much of the early gaming industry, and in part it was because the companies doling out the licenses didn't give a fuck about games and were happy just to make the extra cash. They just handed things over to the highest bidder and didn't really a give a fuck about the results. It took a while for them to realize having half-assed games attached to your IPs was a bad look. Shit, given how the recent Avengers game went I'm still not sure everyone got the memo

It really is a shame... because Arcade's Revenge genuinely feels like it COULD'VE BEEN good, by LJN's standards at least... and yet the messed it ALL up by raising the difficulty as much as they did, with cheap design choices and traps in the levels to catch players off guard, and what hurts the most is that this was probably done so they couldn't beat it over a rental... what a shame...

I mean, it really was the standard of the time, I get that... but FUCK, Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin on SEGA consoles, and SEGA's X-Men titles were ALL SUPERB for their time, so it could've been done, especially when mixing both of these IPs when their popularity was at an ALL TIME HIGH.

Did you ever learn about Mario 3's warp zone? My childhood experiences with that game generally involved either warping to some world of my choice and then messing around for a while before giving up, or warping to the last world and actually finishing the game. I never even considered playing through all the worlds, with or without cheating, in one session - until I randomly decided to do so as an adult one time. And yeah, according to that experience, Mario 3 definitely belongs in this thread. (It doesn't qualify for OP's hard mode though, since it has a warp system.)

castlevania had saves on the fds, but none of the cartridge versions. it's not very long, but easy to get stuck. then there's castlevania the adventure on gameboy. this one's even shorter, only about 20-30 minutes without game overs, but a lot of the game is trial and error to find the right strategies, so you'll end up getting game overs just to inch a little bit further and replay the parts you know how to do. once you figure everything out, you could do a 1cc easily, so it's kind of a good fit for gameboy which has limited battery, but once i beat it i had absolutely no desire to ever touch it again.

Exactly, I have no idea how they though THIS was going to make anyone go out of their way to buy it... like, "Oh, I just HAVE to complete Spider-Man & X-Men in Arcade's Revenge!" or something, I'm sure it's what they thought, which just makes all feel more ridiculous. There were a ton of better options on both the SNES and Genesis in 1992, I mean, Genesis got Sonic 2 that year, for example.

It's a real shame, because Spider-Man controls so well in this... it could've been a genuinely GOOD LNJ title, which is crazy, and yet they managed to ruin it with a bunch of BS that wasn't needed...
