Were you alive/conscious back when "Project Reality" was revealed as the Ultra 64?

64 is legit the GOAT console. Still dusting it off for Christmas every year to play multiplayer games with my family and do some random shit in Zelda and Mario

Certainly do, it's a part of history that's not really talked much by ecelebs I guess, so younger folk have no idea

I was conscious but the way I heard about N64 was someone's mom was insistent that it would be the next big thing and the playstation would be a pale footnote in comparison. And looking back how right she was.

I vaguely remember kids at school being hype about it. I wasn't really into video games at the time and only had a few games on our old W95 PC at home.

Ironically my Auntie genuinely worked at Nintendo as an accountant and got my parents an employee discount and bought itnon release. No one at school believed me at first, but it started my long love of video games with Mario 64 and Pilot Wings being the first games we owned.

Yes, and I remember I remember the SGI renders of "project reality". I remember when the first picture of the controller came out. I remember downloading a tiny, pixelated video of the Robotech game, the first video footage available... I remember the reporting from Shoshinkai 1995 and the subsequent E3 when there was first hands on reporting of the N64. I remember it all.

it was more of an add-on than a successor. i don't think it would have done too well anyway. at that time people could still remember the fate of the mega cd and also remember how slow it was.

By late 94 or earlt 95, "Ultra" was already decided, maybe Killer Instinct was the first instance of it.

Why are Nintendo's console codenames so consistently better than their actual console names?

Even "Project Cafe" although it's a bit boring was better than the piece of shit name "Wii U".

In fact, the controller lived up to the console's name by doing just that: "Wii!" - right into the television screen.

>Were you alive/conscious back when "Project Reality" was revealed as the Ultra 64?

I was either 13 or 14 years old. I remember getting Nintendo Power magazine in the mail and reading all about Project Reality. I even had this large door poster of Fulgore from Killer Instinct 1, it was a KI1 render, and it was purchased using 'nintendo power points' from the magazine, and it had "coming in 1995 to the Nintendo Ultra 64" on the corner. Which was funny, because Killer Instinct 1 did not come to the U64 and the U64 was changed to Nintendo 64 and released in 1996. But also, the Killer Instinct arcade machine would have t\hat message of "coming to the Nintendo Ultra 64 in 1995". Basically, I had this in poster form on my wall this:

And i remember the preview footage on NintendoMania of games running at consistent frame rate even if it was just 30-40fps, because those were not actual hardware demos but running on SGI stations, and before Nintendo once again, bottlenecked their console.
