The Sega Megadrive was the first home console I owned, and I guess I played all the standard games on it, but sometimes you get that occasional game that no-one seems to have ever heard of. Everyone you meet who's into games, you ask them if they've played this great game and they don't know it.

For me that game was Dynamite Headdy. It's my favourite platformer of all time, and I'm sure there must be people on /vr/ who have played it too.

For those who aren't familiar, Dynamite Headdy is a sort of proto-Rayman. Your main weapon is your head, which you fling at enemies, and which can grip on to things as you jump through the air, so you can use it to climb and swing, and you can change your head into various different heads that have different functions: one is a bomb, one is a grappling hook for scaling walls, one is a rocket for flying, one is a hammerhead for hitting and busting metal objects etc.

The game has a really unique feel in that there are no stock level designs or boring runs involving jumping across endless platforms and jumping on enemies. Every level is an original gameplay experience, often based around the gigantic array of weird bosses, which start off hard, and get more and more crazy as the game progresses

Anyone else love this game?

Also if anyone has a copy of the Secret Bonus Point tribute album, let me know, it seems to have disappeared from the internet.

>> No.1134418

Yeah, it's my favorite game ever. Has been since I was like 6. I think I still have Secret Bonus Point on my computer somewhere. I hated it but I could probably find it buried here and upload it if you want.

It would be amazing if you could, actually. I'd like to at least give it a go. The website it was hosted on seems to be er... not hosting it anymore.

It used to be my favourite game. It's only been surpassed by a few rpgs and strategy games, which obviously have a very different and much more involved gameplay.

For me it was Crystalis
Like the SNES Zelda game, although there were more RPG like features and was made before that game I think.

New I guess. What are you getting at?

I meant that pre-internet I didn't know anyone else who had played it. Like when I was a kid it was a pretty obscure game, at least where I'm from.

It's like everything has to be spelt-out for you fucking people.

Here's the Secret Bonus Point album, by the by. If I remember right they had a choice between FLAC or MP3 and I only seemed to download the MP3 version:
http://www.mediafire.com/?cau7cf36makwatd

The majority of it sounds like generic stuff you'd find on OC Remix and a lot of the time it's difficult to tell what song is even being arranged. There's a lot of synthesized orchestra samples on the album, which I absolutely can't stand, but that's just me. Off the top of my head the "Sky High" (Spinderella, Baby Face, etc.) arrangement is really, really good but not much else really stood out to me.

Quit shitting up someone else's thread with your snobbery, and quit bringing down the general quality of the board by hating on newcomers for no reason.

If you feel like rambling about this game, I'm listening. I had a genesis in the 90's. I've always heard the name of this game and thought it was cool sounding but know nothing of it. 1 Lurker attained

I wish there was more love for Headdy on the internet. I also wouldn't mind a sequel, but that's just wishful thinking.

This game definitely has a lot of charm

>> No.1135091

The game isn't like, hidden or something. It's even available on Steam nowadays.
I happened to play it as kid. But even if I hadn't, I had been able to find it because I actually hear it recommended a lot. Even if it wasn't recommended by others, when you play, say 3, games of the same company, you probably want to go to gamefaqs and look at the list of games made by them - that's how checked Alien Soldier.

So many retro games deserved sequels. I was always pining for a Heart of Darkness sequel.

That would be a good thread in itself: 'Retro games that should have had sequels'.

I would be happy if we just had atleast another cinematic platformer.
We could have gotten a better flashback, but nooooo... they always have to ruin games this gen.

Maybe the Oddworld remake will suffice.

I always love to see a Dynamite Headdy thread. That remix album is terrible btw, don't listen to it.

I'll give it one listen, since I love the game's soundtrack so much.

I guess I'd just prefer an album of all the original music, though. Is that available at all?

What do you think is the hardest boss?

I remember being stuck for ages on the 'Headdy Wonderland' robot. I loved how it seemed pretty easy at first, and you spend about five minutes getting those keys thrown into his back and you think you've won, and then that music starts and all hell breaks loose.

At first I felt like it was impossible to dodge his homing attacks, but I finally did it. Then there was Twin Freaks...

My favourite boss is Babyface. I thought it was hilarious as a kid. Shit; still do.

I don't have one but here are the files to make your own. It has instructions and everything

Also, the tags are hilariously bad on this set. I have no idea if the guy from Logic System/Yellow Magic Orchestra did anything besides the vocal track of "Headdy The Hero" but he does do the music for Guardian Heroes however.

Haven't heard of Ristar. I'll check it out. What's the gameplay like?

>> No.1135179

>>1135171
Ooh, I get to talk about Ristar. It's a platformer where grabbing is your method of attack.

I first played it on Sonic Mega Collection. Remember doing the game log thing for quite some time to unlock it I think. It's really colorful, vibrant and the music is atmospheric. Ristar is angry in the American release and in the Japanese he has much more inviting appearance, and there are some differences later on in game across regions. It's very good and deserving some coverage.

>>1135161
Headdy Wonderland and Twin Freaks are both pretty hard if you don't know what to do, but if you play the game a lot you get the pattern down.

>> No.1135183

>>1135171
i dont quite know what i could compare the gameplay to, its built around the idea of your characters ability, he has stretchy arms and can grab stuff and pull himself into it sort of like a body slam, but it works really well, i also love the scenery, the bosses, and my favorite thing about the game is the soundtrack. Also the final boss is epic. Hehe ive still got it on my megadrive

Sounds like something Dynamite Headdy fans will enjoy.

>> No.1135206

Here's two arranged tracks from the Official Dynamite Headdy Album.

One's a remix of Headdy The Hero with lyrics by Robin Suchy and the other song is a remix of the music featured in the claymation commercial.

Could Treasure sue the people who made "Puppeteer"? It seems like a pretty obvious Headdy knockoff.

>> No.1136264

Aww yes, OP. I agree that not many people know Dynamite Headdy (/vr/ excluded, apparently), but that doesn't stop it from being a gem.
Also, what in the world are you talking about? I downloaded the album some weeks ago, I found the site easily. Here, it's on my history: http://kngi.org/dhsbp/music.html

...Wait, what? It was removed? What in the world happened? Don't tell me SEGA fucked up and threw them a lawsuit, much like they did with Streets of Rage Remake.

>> No.1136272

>>1136190
Headdy came out nearly 20 years ago and the idea of heads/masks/helmets granting powers is hardly novel. Also, it's very different in gameplay terms.
