Especially Yellow, mostly because your own little Pikachu to follow you around, and basically you got to play as Ash."

You really only need 3 or 4 Pokemon to roll through the whole game.

Maaybe early on you might need some supplementary help
e.g. if you're playing Yellow and want to beat Brock easily,
you'll have to catch a Pokie that probably won't be on your team in a few gym battles.

But other than that you're fine.
I'm playing Yellow now, and my team is:
>Pikachu
>Bulbasaur
>Charmander
>Squirtle
>Abra

So I guess 5. But I COULD do it with fewer, I just like having a broad team, and I like having the starters with me ;3

I would play Pokemon on an emulator but I don't have that much free time and the game doesn't feel as personal that way. It's a self-imposed 'hard mode' of the game, named after the guy who first did it- the three basic rules are:
1. If a pokemon faints, it's dead. You have to release it or put it in a graveyard box in the PC.
2. You can only capture the first wild pokemon you meet in each area. Miss it? Tough luck, chump.
3. You name everything you catch, preferably with names that have some serious thought behind them- it should hurt if one of your team dies.

Bulbapedia has an article on it that has additional rules and depth.

I remember reading somewhere that the mew "glitche" and other similar ones are more like debugger that progamers used in testing/editing phases, ai read that the programer intentionally set it up that gamer in th us to find out the "error" . Right after the release of the red/blue games in the US , Nintendo magazine did an article on how to discover the debugger since the programers had expected it to be found.

>> No.1656584

Not sure if anyone here knows this yet but you can get mew in r/b/y legitimately before you even get the second badge. all you need to do is visit cerulean pokecenter, then go catch an abra in the grass. dont fight the lone guy in the grass left of nugget bridge. fight everyone on the way to bills house except the youngster with the lvl 9 slowpoke. get abra in your party. then, go to where the guy to the left of nugget bridge is. you line yourself up so he is just out of view, then you take a single step down. as soon as he comes into view, press start, and use teleport. the excalmation will appear over the Guy's head, but you're teleporting away. now your start button doesnt work. then go fight and defeat the youngster with the slowpoke. after, dont take a step, and telport again(start works again) then, proceed to walk up nugget bridge and a little ways up your start menu will automatically open. press b to close it, and then you'll run into a lvl 7 mew! it dodges balls, so make sure you have a lot.

It's been posted. But you should probably know two things. A: The Slowpoke's in-battle Attack stat influences the Mew's level. It starts at 7 so if you reduce it 6 times via Growl you will fight a level 1 Mew instead. B: Mew and some other Pokémon are subject to the experience underflow glitch, so if they gain less than 54 experience at level 1 it wraps around to a huge number and they end up at level 100.

Yo, that's smalltime son. They've got ways of writing and executing arbitrary code from RAM in both gen I and II now. They actually only just found out a way to theoretically be able to do similar things in Emerald, but it's still a long ways off things to how much more complex the games got.

Machamp: Cross Chop, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Curse
Snorlax: Rest, Curse, Body Slam, Shadow Ball

Now THERE'S a game nobody ever talks about anymore.

Voice-command stuff never really caught on, did it?
Even to this day you don't see stuff with that.
I know they had some voice peripherals all the way back for the NES (I think made by Konami) but they weren't popular.

Fun fact: Hey You, Pikachu! is the only English-language game to use the N64's Voice Recognition Unit (or "VRU" as it was called.)
The only other game that used it was a Japanese game called
"Densha de Go! 64," or "Go by Train! 64" -- a train simulation game.

I personally enjoyed HYP, but I can see why a lot of people disliked it.
It was a fun little gimmicky toy, but not much else.
No comment on Go by Train! 64, though.

My favorite Pokemon game for the N64 was probably Pokemon Snap, just because of how original and fun it was.

They actually did some really cool stuff in that game and it was deeper than I thought it would be. Thing was, though, that there were time limits combined with how rarely the game would actually register your commands really killed it for it.

When Nintendo tried something similar again with voice control in Nintendogs that aspect was actually functional. I think voice command games have the potential to be fun, especially as the tech gets better.

Pokemon games I own on this list:

>R/B
>G/S
>TCG
>Stadium 1 and 2
>Snap

I have played yellow. I do wish I owned yellow and crystal. My favorite will always be the first gen games. They came at the right time for me to enjoy as a kid growing up.

G/S were perfect follow ups to gen1. Basically as perfect of a sequel as you can get imo.

Trading Card game was great fun so nothing really to add here.

I loved Stadium because of it's connectivity with the gameboy games. Also the fact that you could get rare pokemon in the stadium games. The other things in stadium were great as well like the mini games.

Snap was a rather interesting game. Surprised they never made a sequel.

Since this is retro I am glad I can talk about the older gen games without being attacked with morons going nostalgia goggles. I was never able to get into or even play the later games except for R/S. Those games were good imo but at that point the pokemon formula wore thin and to me it seemed like the series would never match the old games "magic" basically. I just simply like everything about the older games much more than the new games. I also liked Fire Red although I only first played it last year.

Maybe all that nostalgia insults has somewhat of a point. I really don't care since my opinion is just that, my opinion. I simply can't change how I feel about it.

>> No.1661491

Hypothetically, would the third gen have been much better if it followed closer to what gen2 did? Such as connecting regions (they could have did 3), maybe introducing one more type, better monster designs than what gen3 has (opinion).

I still loved Yellow, but the one thing that always urked me was the selection of pokemon for the gym leaders. Instead of Surge having 2 pokemon and an awesome Raichu, he only gets a Raichu. Koga instead of having various poison types, he gets 5 Venemoths. Giovanni gets a shitty Persian on his team just because he had one in the anime. Not only that, but getting all the starters, while fun, makes the game piss easy later on.

I loved the starters over RBY's, but let's take a look at these stat-wise.

RBY had some pretty good ideas. A Grass starter that focused on special and support, a Speed/Special Fire type, and a Defensive Water (with unfortunately not much in the way of support).

GSC had:
-A defensive Grass with barely any status moves, screens as almost it's only support, and not much in the way of recovery of health.
-Almost a complete reskin of Charizard right down to the status minus Flying-Type and with a less useful movepool outside of Thunderpunch.
-A water starter that looked great on paper but didn't tun out that great until later, thanks to most of it's power not having any STAB.

Actually it's only traded pokemon. Notice in the original games they never say anything about your own pokemon disobeying you, only "Outsiders"

You could take your Pikachu in Yellow, level it up to ~60 in RB, trade it back before you even reach Pewter and completely rape everything if you wanted to, since it has the same ID, Name and Secret ID.

With an emulator called BGB.

It allows Link Cable emulation.
It's kind of a shitty emulator on the whole, though, in my opinion. I use RetroArch
But it was the only one I could find that didn't look completely shoddy/shady that would allow linking.

Even though I normally use a different emu, it was just a simple matter of changing the .extension of the save file when loading it in different emulators.

Basically just download BGB, open up your game in two separate instances, and select "Link" option, go to the Trade Center in-game, and trade.

One caveat though: it can potentially fuck up data in the transfer.
Not BADLY -- but that's why my Alakazam is named "LAKAZAM" and my Arcanine doesn't have a name.

It doesn't do this every time, though.
And if you're careful and create separate save files before each attempted trade you can avoid this.
I just didn't really care.

Mostly because I can't resist the temptation to use emulator tricks,

I had a purple see-through one like pic related as a kid.
