Can we get a survival horror thread going?

Lets avoid RE, Silent Hill, Dino Crisis, Alone in the dark and Parasite Eve for once. What else is out there? What little unknown series is worth it's weight in gold but completely forgotten?

PS2 had some excellent horror games but we can't talk about it.

On PS1 theres Martian Gothic Unification, Clocktower 1 and 2, D which is a first person horror game, Galerians, Overblood...

Theres not much else on PS1, there was a big influx in the 2003ish era of horror but it kinda dies out during the end of PS1 era.

Then theres
>notretro
Shit like Penumbra, Cryostasis, Cold Fear, etc

Can we try to salvage the thread by focusing on pre-RE survival horror games or even more specifically what I like to call "Alone in the Dark Clones". I have two notable ones.

The first is a PC game called Ecstatica. I guess the controls are pretty shitty though you can probably reconfigure them in DOSbox to be more to your liking. It's on my radar because it recieved negative press at release for it's strongly violent and sexual content.

The other is Doctor Hauzer, a Japanese 3DO game which is mainly on my radar because my favorite way to play Alone In The Dark is on 3DO

That's all I've got in my backlog off the top of my head but I would LOVE to uncover more.

Survival horror existed before the PS1 dude. This is to find the other stuff outside of that like the 2 dudes under you listed.

I enjoyed Countdown: Vampires just for how fucking crazy it was. T.R.A.G. Is pretty fun too, but that's more action-based than survival horror.

I also highly recommend Soul of the Samurai. It's basically Resident Evil with swords.

This game really didn't deserve to be only available in PAL and JAP, if it got a North American release, I think it would have gotten more of the attention it deserved.

I admit the core gameplay is simple, but the way it's executed is very elegant.

I felt it was a little hit and miss with some of its areas on providing tension. Having to rush for a light-switch in case something decided to nab you in the dark was neat. A certain area where you meet up with someone to perform some running exercise was pretty hectic as well.

A funny little thing in the game is the inclusion of a day/night cycle, as well as random weather effects. I was wandering outside the stern of the ship, and it started to rain.

Haunting Ground is a great PS2 horror game that should get a sequel or another chapter in the game like Amnesia got one. You can't even attack in this game. Just RUN!!!!!!!

I thought Clocktower II: The Struggle Within was pretty creepy.

It's also tedious-as-fuck to play point-and-click Horror.

>> No.1742701

I've actually seen the game talked about multiple times on /vr/without objections, but yeah, it IS post 2000. So expect the Retro police.

It's my favorite Team Silent game, as blasphemous as it sounds, though I admit the time limit can be very intimidating.

>> No.1742709

>>1742698
Honestly, The Struggle Within is generally considered the weakest Clocktower game. PS1 Clocktower 1 and Clocktower First Fear on the SNES are much better in my book. Though don't try the PS1 one unless you REALLY don't give a fuck about graphics, though it does a lot of neater stuff for its scares and just generally has a lot of cooler "the dev team thinks of everything" moments.

Honestly, I saw HVGN's playthrough of it and it was pretty bad. Not even a single scare, but a lot of tediousness and bad design.

I don't know what went wrong, considering all the previous CT's weren't bad

Different team. The guy who made Clock Tower 1-2 didn't work on it. I don't even know if it was made by Human, but Clock Tower 3 was shitty

>> No.1742751

>>1742721
For fuck's sake, you even get a GUN. And I really think that's just emblematic of the experience. I really hope anyone who played or has seen The Struggle within to not let that deter them from the rest of the series.
>>1742735
That makes all kinds of sense. Keep in mind the PS2 Clocktower 3/4 isn't by Human, it's by Capcom. They bought the bought and still have the rights to Clocktower, but considering Capcom's current state of affairs, it seems the property may come into the hands of someone else, and I hope they bring new life to the franchise.
>>1742727
I haven't gotten to play Echo Night much, but I really hope the translation patch for 2 gets finished. Echo Night really seemed like a solid horror game and I need to get back to it.

It's a bad-looking -- and playing -- game; but, it's still creepy in parts.
