You think that's bad? This fucker was barely an enemy. Seeing this dick was the uneasiest I've ever felt playing a video game as a kid.

The design is just so un-Mario. You're looking at a shit ton of goofy cartoon enemies and then bam "hyper realistic" Lochness Monster. Eat your heart out creepypasta kiddies. Even in the DS remake they gave him big gooey eyes and a pair of goofy looking goggles.

I played through Doom first time when I was about 8 or 9 years old. Went through the whole thing on ITYTD, summer '95. Well, almost the whole thing, couldn't beat the Cyberdemon.

Not only was he way too hard for me then (his rockets would wreck my shit and this was keyboard only. I didn't have the keyboard dexterity at that age to handle the CD), he fucking scared the shit out of me. Most of the time I was just running away from him and when I'd turn a corner and bump into his huge looming ass I'd shit myself. I was petrified of the bastard. Eventually I realised it wasn't doing me any good getting scared like that so I moved on with my life and went to Episode 3.

It wasn't until a year or so later that I returned to Doom and no fucks were given. Beat him then without a problem and wasn't afraid of him either... at least not nearly as much haha.

I was just about to say the same thing! About noticing an obvious pattern here.

I wonder why that it? I think we realize subconciously two things, one is that we're at a huge disadvantage underwater and two, we all used to be fish at one point in our evolution and genetically know what it feels like to be eating by a bigger fish. The fear in our minds runs as deep as the oceans in our nightmares.

I think vidya managed to unintentionally play on that fear. You're right though, someone should capitalize on that.

Ch'thon (E1 boss) was worse IMO. I was a dumbass kid and couldn't figure out how to beat him though.

There's also the sound that some enemies make when gibbing. I only noticed it after I played a version without music, but it's actually really stomach turning. It's a sort of grunt that turns into a gurgly choking sound. Not at all like the much more noticeable "meat slapping" sound effect from later Id games, which was hilarious.

Doom64 was my first taste of Doom and christ did that game give me nightmares. I eventually got Doom on the PSX and even that wasn't as spooky as Doom64-- it just nailed the atmosphere so perfectly. It wasn't until many years later that I started playing Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 on PC and those were almost comical in comparison. Jesus christ that music wasn't fitting at all I almost couldn't believe it.

I've been wanting to re-play Doom64 because I think that had the best sprites and the soundtrack was intensely ominous and fore-boding.

In normal environment you need to either be in a cave or a walled in building to be deprived of light and still, movement vectors are limited.

I can't remember how young I was when I played Marathon Evil, probably 11 or so. It's a very well made mod/TC for what was at the time my favourite game.
In my opinion, it still stands as the best video game realization of the horror aspects of Aliens, at least of what I've played.
AvP 1 was scary as balls, but this made me feel genuine terror.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjfUm7GW904

(This person is playing with the brightness turned way up - you basically couldn't make out the creature in the darkness before you were a couple of meters from it. These things were apparently called "Devlins". )

I felt a very real terror while playing. The way the creature sprite slowly became visible and emerged from the darkness... it seemed so real to me.
After dying a couple of times, I couldn't force myself to exit the first room and had to stop playing. I remember having this stone cold feeling in my stomach.

I wish I could experience such raw emotion again, but I fear that I've grown desensitized.

Watching Alien, did anyone else experience how the xenomorph was scary because you wasn't really sure what it was, or what it looked like? It was alien in the real sense of the word.

For me, Devlins emulated this very well. By having a complex body structure, moving fast and quickly emerging from the thick darkness, I never got a true feel of what they looked like. I only knew they were dangerous and that I had to run or die.

Technically speaking, there is Deep Fear, but it's not the kind of 'underwater' you're looking for.

You might want to check Treasure of the Deep though;

My first taste of fear from a video game.

To help clarify: T-rexes couldn't be killed in this game, so you had to blind it temporarily with bombs. You had no indication of when the blindness would wear off, and it could kill you pretty much instantly.

Imagine the nerves as you traverse that little obstacle course right in front of its face

Good choice. I wasn't very scared of it, but boy is it a surprising thing to have in the first level of a game.

The buildup for Lisa was fantastic. When you finally had to face her in the caves, I was probably more scared than a video game will ever scare me again.

The only person I knew in real life who had a fear of water had a sister who drowned so it was that for him. This thread is kind of depressing after remembering this now.

Are there any ghost/sunken ship type levels/areas in videogames besides Super Mario World? The only other one I remember is not retro, the from Wind Waker. Why was that single flower there? It fucked with my mind as a kid. Ghosts Houses actually scared me as a kid but the Sunken Ghost ship was even scarier.

Sure they were. I can think of the wrecked ship in Super Metroid and that one in Super Mario RPG, but they're not very spooky.

The only person I knew in real life who had a fear of water had a sister who drowned so it was that for him. This thread is kind of depressing after remembering this now. The worst part is that it wasn't like a swimming pool or something, she went for a walk and never returned and I guess they found out after the fact. It brings up all sorts of fears about dying and the unknown even from just hearing about him talk about it.

fuckers appear in the Lake Jyun subgate, which is technically sunken... so that counts, right?

The variant that appears in that particular level starts invisible; and once one spots you, it starts making a very unnerving clanking sound and following you, to try and ambush you. I HATED THEM.
