I've been interested in playing this. How is it?

>> No.2111139

Personally Daggerfall is one of my top PC games of all time. If you enjoy really massive exploration and labyrinth style dungeons its a must. Hell you don't even have to do the main quest if you want, you really can do just about anything you want to in it.

this may be outside the boundaries of this board, but does the series keep getting better? Why would i play Daggerfall if, say, Morrowind is better? Or if Skyrim is better still?

>> No.2111598

>>2111593
Daggerfall is so massive because it is procedurally generated. All the later games were designed by hand. So they aren't broken and buggy, but they don't give the same type of feel. I'm not a huge fan of the series at all, but I enjoyed Morrowind and Skyrim. I hated Oblivion but played it anyway, so take that as a recommendation of sorts?

ahhh, i never knew that! I fricking love proceedural stuff, so i'll have to give it a run :) Thank you.

>> No.2111605

Morrowind is like a lesser Daggerfall
Obliviin is a lesser Morrowind
Skyrim is the shit but it's very plebby and simple and stripped down compared to each other game (thus it's extreme popularity)

Don't misunderstand him. It's not different every time you play.

Nono, i do understand. The original Elite was procedural. Nothing to do with Roguelikes.

>> No.2111670

the lack of inherent logic in the dungeons always really bothered me.

What I'd want to see is some means by which all the dungeons were interconnected and you could travel across the country completely underground, and find workshops and stuff to do all your smithing/enchanting/camping/alchemy/spell research.

Sort of like if Daggerfall and Vagrant Story had a baby, an Elder Scrolls game that was one giant sprawling dungeon (Like Dark Souls maybe? only more mazey and labyrinthy)

Maybe you'd like Arx Fatalis

Yeah, or even UU if you haven't played it yet. I loved how sprawling and interconnected they were able to make the Abyss feel in the first game.

I dunno if non linear is the right word for hexen 2, the puzzles set themselves up to pretty much be completed in a specific order so you more or less have to follow a set path, elsewise you're just running around finding no progress

>> No.2111725

Both UU and Arx Fatalis have frustrating controls and odd, unpolished gameplay. They're also somewhat limited in scope.

The way Vagrant Story or Dark Souls, or even Shadow Tower controls flow and gameplay balance is much more refined.

In terms of deep dungeon puzzle mechanics stuff there's games like Brandish or Wizardry which are far more intricate and profoundly satisfying to conquer.

There's a difference between a game having poor balance and you being poor at understanding how to play it.

>> No.2111745

>>2111734
no, sorry, i can play vagrant story just fine thank you but the game was clearly balanced intending to let the player rely on the affinity system. to play the game "correctly" as-is, the player must ignore and abuse the system they are specifically told to utilize.

>> No.2111751

>>2111745
There are several ways to play the game. The only wrong way to play the game is to ignore the game mechanics and attempt to slog through without any strategy. There are several ways in which you can make things work for you, elemental affinities (not creature affinities which are rather supplementary) being but a single one of them.

I'll admit you have a point, but the game had a certain way of making you feel free within its limits. The first game had a similar feel to that end.

I wish I could get this game running on Wii.

Actually Shadow Tower worked fairly well but the music was garbled, which doesn't matter at all since there's hardly any music in the game.

I've never played a game where straferunning was as blazing fast as this. The effect is way stronger than it is in Doom for sure. You're like more than twice as fast when running "diagonally"

I absolutely love it
have more hours into it than any other ES game
some people will complain about its procedural nature and how assets get reused
but tbh I don't care about that since no other game nearly offers the same level of freedom to do literally whatever you wish, or the same degree of character customization both in the creation screen and in game
plus I personally really enjoy the dungeons for their labyrinthine quality. every mission into them I feel like Theseus seeking my Minotaur, and even if textures are the same between dungeons, the actual layout is always incredibly unique and full of little puzzles and secrets

like once I was just clicking random shit when I touched a small wooden pulpit and a door opened up in the wall to a large courtroom looking place full of treasure (and harpies)

its also one of the few games where a Diplomancer style class is actually playable and very fun (though difficult)

-smithing
-have followers or companions
-create your own city or country, fight wars, etc.
-murder the emperor
-kill gods
-sex
-have children

Of all the 90's depictions of the future I never thought this one would actually be the one to come true.
