Is it worth it to learn how to play this? I popped it in and had to look up how to get past the title screen by pressing some unusual key, and it only got worse from there.

Mainly looking to hear from other people who got into it from a gaming-history perspective, not people who played it when its mechanics were the norm.

Play it with xu4 for more streamlined controls.
Most of the shortcuts are easy to remember. It's not like Ultima 1 which distinguished between opening a coffin and unlocking a chest.

Use Exult for Ultima 7, possibly with Keyring mod.
I'd also recommend to play 4-6 beforehand as 7 builds up on them. 4 in particular is crucial in taking the role of the Avatar.

It may crash occasionally and large resolutions can cause problems with certain events but the payoff is worth it.
