Thought I would give it a go since it came so highly recommended and I never had a copy growing up. Its really awesome but floaty as fuck.

actually touch fuzzy get dizzy is a popular meme
someone will come here and whine about it being a collecathon but don't listen to them, you're not required to collect anything. The extra levels you unlock with 100% completion aren't very good imo, not really worth the time

What I loved most about this game was how different each world and boss was. It really made me feel like I was going on an adventure.

It's not floaty. Tap the jump button and Yoshi will make a quick jump. Press the button and he will jump higher. Press and hold and he will float a bit.
YI can be pretty gotta go fast, it's both heavy and floaty depending on how you play or what is needed for each situation.

Yoshi's Island might be the best 2D platformer ever, or at least one of the best.
It's a game I'd reccommend even for people who don't normally like Mario games.
I'll say as a Mario fan, I prefer Super Mario World, but Yoshi's Island goes beyond of what a Mario game is about.
It's a must play. I remember getting kind of irked by the crayon kiddy graphics when I was 10 and got this game in 1995. Like, I could appreciate how incredible it looked, but I was bothered that it was kiddy. I was playing shit like MKII or Killer Instinct already.
But nowdays, I'm glad they went for that kind of aesthetic. it's actually not as filled with sugar as the art direction on Yoshi's Story for N64 is, they look kiddy (in purpose as this is Baby Mario's game with Yoshi) but it's not that cute, in fact some things in the game are kinda creepy when you think that it's supposed to be a kid's game (like the Yoshi skulls and bones in the soil at the last world).
Yoshi's Island's graphics will never get old and are great to look at, music is great too (dat cave music)
