That would be valid if you were actually old enough to have an opinion of your own, and not simply parroting whatever nonsense the eceleb of the month is spewing out on their YT channel.

No one particularly gave a shit one way or the other about the Tiger handhelds until Rolfe and whoever else decided they were the next piece of nostalgia they needed to let the kiddos know they were supposed to hate. I know this isn't the intention, but that's how it works out. The kiddos weren't even alive for the majority of the stuff these retro reviewers talk about. I've wondered about this

There was one black Friday sale, when black Friday was starting, that Gameboys dropped to $50

I always assumed that maybe it was inflation and $50 was a lot of money back then, I guess I'll never know

I also figure that we were poor, but as a dumb kid I guess I'll never know that either because I don't want to ask them.

They did buy me a nintendo in 1990, back then the Nintendo had dropped to about $130

They rarely bought me a game at retail price though, usually we'd go to flea markets and pawn shops and that's where I got most of my collection.

The only brand new games I got were Super Mario Bros. 3, Ninja Turtles 3, and Megaman 2.

I filled in the gaps by renting games on Wednesday, they had a special for 99 cent 2 day rentals and that's how I played most games..

Part of it is also that I don't think they saw the point to buying another gaming system and then having to get games again.

Part of it was also that they had a real concern that I was spending too much time playing games anyway

Like I honestly don't know if we were poor or not, but sometimes I figure we were.

We had central air, but we only used window units but Mom reasoned that we'd save on A/C by only cooling the rooms we were in, instead of the whole fucking house.

We never had sodas, we only had Kool-aid, but this might be because she figured it was healthier, since you control how much sugar you put in it.

We didn't have the fancy more expensive cereals, she always got Malt-O-Meal, you know the stuff that comes in a bag though honestly it tasted the same to me.

Sometimes if I begged I'd get a box of the fancy stuff like Cookie Crisp or Cinnamon Toast Crunch, or my favorite Cocoa Puffs, shit was delicious, though later Malt-O-Meal made a cocoa puffs cereal.

They bought me a new nintendo but most of the games I played were rented on 99 cent Wednesdays at the local Broadway Video, and the few games bought came from flea markets and pawn shops.

We drove around in a 1984 mercury cougar, which was about 7 years old at the time.

So taking all that into account ok maybe we weren't like piss poor, but they just had to be careful with their money, that's all.

The only reason they got such a bad rap is because of AVGN's nonsense since it suited him to have something he could go all out nuts on for his character. >non-argument

My argument was that my younger self didn't like them, which was not a sentiment I was alone in at the time.

>"These things were in antique shops and landfills by the time you were a kid, kid."

It's not about the last word, it's about the best word.

But your younger self didn't exist when these things were new or relevant.

Loving all the people in this thread assuming everyone who doesn't like tiger games HAS to be a hipster kid.

I'm 30, kids had these back in school. I never understood the appeal of these things. It felt like playing on a calculator. And I remember a kid playing one of these with a crowd of other kids around him. And I didn't even own a game boy yet, so I wasn't comparing them with other handhelds. I had already played some games on my dad's pc, though. What I was really crazy about back then were arcades. I mean, come on, there's no comparison.

>people had their opinions dictated to them by the editors of GamePro and Electronic Gaming Monthly magazines
I remember EGM always gave at least three contradictory opinions about every game

Including one from a man in a ninja mask who believed literally every RPG ever made was garbage and every fighting game ever made was great
