Hello people of /vr/

In this thread I want to discuss old PC games (mid 90s to early 00s) that still run well on modern computers, especially 64 bit systems.

I believe that many fans of retro games just don't have the time to maintain a dedicated legacy system or to fiddle around with a virtual machine to get some Windows 95/98 games to run, but I noticed that quite a few of them don't need all of that, as they will just install and play on a modern computer without major hiccups. So lets list and discuss these games!

To give a few examples (I've got Win7 64 bit):

Tomb Raider II (1997) - I could install and play it without any problems
GTA III (2001) - Required minor fiddling with the installer, runs fine
Stronghold (Crusader) (2001/2002) - iirc they both install and run without problems
Worms World Party (2001) - requires a trick to get rid of the wrong colours, else it runs fine
Railroad Tycoon II (1998) - Installs and runs fine
...

Isn't it a better idea to make a thread how to get games to work on modern systems?

As I said, many people don't have the time, money or knowledge to get certain games to run. Also it is different for each game, and there are lots of tutorials online.

I wanted to create a list of games that one can buy without having to worry too much about compatibility.

The most common reason games can't be installed and/or played on modern systems is that 64 bit Windows doesn't support 16 bit binaries, i.e. almost all DOS applications. Windows 95/98 games sometimes had 16 bit binaries, sometimes 32 bit. I've had cases where the installer was 32 bit an ran fine, but the game was 16 bit and wouldn't start. The other way around exists as well, then you either need a custom installer or you install the game on an old system and just copy the game folder to your modern system.

>GTA III

All you need is silent patch.
