What is the best retro 3D platformer, and why is it Jet Grind Radio?

Jet Grind Radio is aesthetically and aurally fantastic, it just radiates style. WIth that said,the controls are a little floaty and sometimes the game can be outright frustrating, so I think it loses some points to a game like Mario 64 which feels very responsive.

Banjo is great too, the second one was very impressive for the hardware and had loads of variety.

It's a game about moving through 3 dimensional space to collect items, you jump and gain momentum through forward movement. It's a platformer. It would be more difficult to prove that it's not a platformer.

Bayonetta has the primary gameplay element being the combat, TF2 has shooting. Platformer can be mixed with both of those things, but a genre in gaming is generally defined by the core gameplay loop.
