I'll always be resentful with the Adventure series because it reminds me of the time Sega went down, went third party and Sonic went to Nintendo.
When pic related came out I was so infuriated.
A few years ago I bought a Gamecube and loved SA2B and all the other Sega games on it, I stopped being a console war baby, but it still hurt back then.

I think it's great. The variety from character to character keeps the game feeling fresh. The weird ones like Big are mercifully short, and the Sonic stages are all pretty fun.

I believe it holds the best formula for 3D Sonic, since it holds the closest representation it has of 2D Sonic in 3D. That's why I like both games (but more especially the first one).

Not that I dislike boost games, since they too are good, but not the perfect candidate for 3D Sonic.

No. It's a typical 3d platformer, which means clumsy controls and laughable camera.

Fuck 3d platformers. The mid-90s sure bamboozled every single fucking new gamer that got pulled into the hobby by an industry trying to expand beyond its core gaming demographic by all these fucking style over substance games with terrible gameplay.

By the standards of early 3D platformers, yes, it's very good. It's not a masterpiece like Banjo or Mario 64 but it's better than your average 90's 3D platformer.
The only real downside is that it's kind of a tech demo for the Dreamcast. It has a lot of different styles of gameplay and some work better than others.
Sonic moves pretty fast and the animations and audio can be hilarious, and that's made it a meme. It's still a good game, though.

>> No.4036314

It's legitimately an awful fucking game, and this is coming from an autist who beat at 50+ times when he was a kid. I'm willing to concede that maybe it's just a kind of bad game, and that I may be a little critical on it because of how intimately I know the game, but anyone who argues that it deserves a score better than 6/10 needs to take of the nostalgia goggles.

The camera is completely unworkable, the plot is insanely retarded, the lip-syncing/movements are complete trash, the plot doesn't even make a lick of sense, the characters are just unlikeable, the gameplay is pretty bad bar Sonic and Knuckles, the levels are too easy in a bad way (hold forward to win), the levels are too hard in a bad way (loops that randomly kill you, among other things), and THE PLOT IS FUCKING COMPLETE SHIT.

You know what? I take back my 6/10 comment earlier. If anyone gives this game anything over a fucking 4/10 they're a retarded and they deserve to be gassed.

Collision is fucked but I can work through it.

I personally I think it would have been better if it was more open and exploration based like Mario 64 or something, the way Sonic can launch himself by jumping at the end of an upward slope would really lend itself well to crazy platforming.

Huge Sonicfag here. No, it isn't a good game; it and the precedents it set for future Sonic games were what dragged the series through the mud for roughly a decade. Don't believe any nostalgiafag that tries to tell you that this trash is comparable to the Genesis games or in any way a worthy successor.

I can appreciate how it attempted to bring a fresh perspective to the series on paper by experimenting with different styles of gameplay, visuals, and music, though. If they had just made "Sonic 3 and Knuckles 2" and didn't try to differentiate the style at all after the Genesis then that would be enough for me to argue that the series shouldn't have continued as long as it has.

>Sonic Adventure 1, 2
>Sonic Advance 1, 2(never played 3
>Sonic Rush(never played sequel)

So I'm definitely not a super fan, but I still like these games. They all have good things to experience and yeah the Adventure games might have issues but I still like them and I can't help it. it's at least 40% good and at most 70% decent

the good:
>graphics are very good for a 1998 release
>soundtrack is really good
>controls are okay
>Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles (yes, really) are pretty enjoyable to play as, and that's a fairly large portion of the game
>in fact, the worst bits of the game don't take up that much play time at all
>Red Mountain is a fantastic Sonic stage, and probably the best in 3D
>you can also ignore nearly all of the bad parts completely (last story isn't worth it)
>chao

the bad:
>story's fucking trash
>Lost World fucking sucks as a Sonic stage, Sky Deck is pretty iffy too
>the camera sucks, and I'm pretty sure Sonic Team has never made a game with a free-moving camera that works well (maybe Burning Rangers, and that's arguable)
>Big's gameplay is dull as shit -- not because of the fishing (which is relatively fun even), but because looking for Froggy sucks
>Gamma handles like shit
>Amy controls awkwardly and has stages that are even more linear than Sonic's, and they're surprisingly poorly designed

the ugly:
>adventure fields are a neat idea but end up being a bit tedious
>the cutscenes are awfully animated
>if you're playing SADX, the game is glitchy in different, dumber ways, and it's got awful texture replacements and gimped lighting that makes the nicer player models look uglier
>but if you're playing SA on DC, pathing breaks for no reason (really easy example: loops in Emerald Coast)
>but if you're playing SADX, you stand a far higher chance of flat out falling through the floor
>really, both versions are a bit buggy
>Open Your Heart should have started playing during the second phase of the Perfect Chaos fight
>Tails stages are just recut Sonic's stages with some really dumb out-of-place object placements
>I kind of wish the Sky Chase segments were better.
