4596782 No.4596782 [Reply] [Original]

I posted this one some weeks ago in a thread, but it didn't get any replies at all and I just tried again to get into this game:

Have any of you played 1944: The Loop Master? For some reason, this game kicks my ass; after quite a bunch of tries I still can't consistently beat the game after around stage 2's boss / stage 3's boss. And I've been able to clear some hard arcade shooters before. Am I alone here? Any suggestions to increase my consistency here, other than the obvious "just keep playing"?

Otherwise, just talk about these games in general here.

i am pretty suck at shmups.
but really enjoyed Abadox for NES. What a fucking wierd-fuck but damn it is great,

Yep, awesome game, and what is good about it - it's pretty short. I don't like the shmup-genre at all but i hate that genre when it is fucking long.

No one ever talks about Gradius. Can we talk about Gradius? I have damn near all of them, except Gradius III and IV for PS2. My console stopped reading blue-backed discs, so I have no way to play it. I tried ripping it and converting it to DVD to load with ESR, but apparently ESR isn't compatible with the game. Neither is OPL via USB. Oh, well.

>>4596982
/vg/ is pure cancer with tripfags and waifu posting. /vr/ is a much slower board, and that's a good thing. There's maybe a handful of active posters here, and most of us are dedicated hobbyists instead of drive-by crossboarders.

The only Gradius game I liked was Gradius V.

R-Type 3 is a made for console game, and even then it's barely over that. Arcade Darius II is barely half an hour IIRC
>>4597503
Try listening to Blast Wind by the same composer.
>>4597537
That series is fucking classic, I like most of them, though the experience I had while 1-ALLing III wasn't that pleasant (still managed). My favorites are II ARC and Gaiden. I have to get more into IV.

1-ALLing III arcade, btw. Just in case it's not obvious enough.

I could get to the last level in Loop Master but never clear it. I couldn't handle the boss patterns and was just reduced to bomb spamming.

If I recall correctly you could charge up the bomb. You'd get a screen clear both at the start of the charge up and when it was released. Fully charging it also greatly boosted the bomb damage. As a result you'd get a lot further if you planned out when you would bomb ahead of time say "at this point in the boss pattern"

Once you mastered a stage it's important to than try and get a higher rank so that you can get more extra lives.

I can't get into Gladius, for some reason. It just feels overwhelming, I had better time playing Darius, with it's crazy 3-screen layout.

I love shmups but I have never gotten good at one. The idea of 1cc-ing one is so alien to me.

so change your perspective and starting towards one? it's hardly asking you to become a wahhabi overnight is it? and if the concept of learning and striving is also alien to you you need to have a serious talk with yourself about your life.

>I have to get more into IV.
best one desu, it gets a bad rap by muh grafix morons and plebs who can't beat stage 3 but when you realise it's design and start getting good at it it's phenomenal and clearly the most refined of the gradius formulae.

>> No.4598724

OP here
>>4598123
>I couldn't handle the boss patterns and was just reduced to bomb spamming.
This is what happens to me, for some reason the way patterns are in this game makes it seem there's not a reliable way to avoid them.
There are regular bombs as well as the charged bomb that requires time, yes.
What I mean is that starting at the second boss, I can't reliably survive. I can without bombs, but not always, it feels weirdly unpredictable.
>>4598436
This is quite common, particularly if you are younger and/or have been conditioned by modern games. Try 1-ALLing Batsugun Special Version.
>>4598459
Cee, c'mon, you're shitting on players for no reason here. That first guy likes stuff like Gradius III ARC and IV ffs. I can understand getting hostile towards some credit feeding noobs calling these games shit, but you are making baseless assumptions here. Calm down, OK? Not everyone here is a collectorfag (myself certainly excluded), stop bringing that boogeyman up. No one is talking about collecting here, just the games themselves.
>>4598461
By this I meant I haven't 1-ALL'd it yet but from what I've played I enjoyed it quite a bit. I have no means to play it nicely right now so that's why I didn't finish it. From what I've played and heard it'll probably trump II ARC and Gaiden for me once I clear it.

What makes it so damn hard is not having an easy to read hitbox.

You have very dense bullets, all very fast, and with random/aimed shots. This creates a formula where you need to move your hitbox precociously, very fast, in ways that cannot be committed to memory.

I'm not a collector. Most of my games are backups and ROMs. Only time I buy physical cartridges or discs is when I can find them dirt cheap at flea markets.

I don't know why you would make such a bizarre assumption based on my interest in Gradius. I've been playing the shit out of this series since I was a kid.

It seems more random than in most shooters, yeah. With that speed it's a crapshoot. It's one of the more unfair feeling shooters I've played, and I pretty much never find them unfair.

You are obsessed, Cee. Realize that /vr/ has different kinds of people. Do you think that most of the guys on the FPS generals come to these shmup generals? Or the storyfags in FFVII threads? There are collectorfags, but as you can see they don't overwhelm shmup threads.

I just ordered pic related on an impulse buy since it was cheap. I've played a few other versions, but I'm curious how the Game Boy port pans out. R-Type II for GB has some pretty scathing reviews, so I didn't see any point in bothering to get R-Type DX instead. I mean, the original R-Type might be the only game worth playing on the collection.

>>4598923
I don't own a PSP at the moment. Any units I've gotten my hands on had persistent issues with spontaneously developing dead pixels. I eventually gave up on it and went back to classic Game Boy.

The console Gradius collections are nice though. I still play Gradius Deluxe Pack and Salamander Deluxe Pack for PS1. The only reason I would want the PSP collection is to play its rendition of MSX Gradius 2 with smooth scrolling and enhanced graphics.

But anon, dx version had the original versions included in addition to the colorized ones. I really liked the GB renditions of 1 and 2, don't listen to fucking reviewers.

This version of the game (R-Type) is nostalgic to me but I'd just stick to the arcade one these days.

>> No.4599793

>>4599780

I don't own a Game Boy Color, so having colorized versions of the games is a moot point.

The reviews seemed to raise some valid criticisms about R-Type II being a shoddy port. Weapons don't function the way they're supposed to, for instance, and some of the game's content (including an entire level, I believe) was cut for unknown reasons.

It's a Game Boy port of a late 80's arcade game, what did you expect lol
