I liked ALttP when I played it, but it’s one of those games I don’t think I could sit through again. Thinking about having to switch back and forth between light and dark worlds constantly feels vaguely sickening to me now, although I don’t think it was actually that bad.

I prefer those, too. I can't tell what it is, but LttP is close to my lease favorite Zelda games. It's odd - it's hailed as one of the best, but the two or three times I've played through it, it just doesn't do much for me.

I think I might have had to play it when it was released to really love it, like most who do seem to have.

I feel exactly the same way. I can't put my finger on what is so off putting about it, but there just seems to be this absence of the qualities that make the other Zelda games released around it so enjoyable. I'm sure that playing it as your first Zelda would be a fantastic experience, but it just lacks the thrill of the NES games and the refinement and compelling worlds of the later games.

For what it's worth, I really like alttp and think it is a fantastic game, but am not surprised by this. There are times that I've gone back and played it, where I just felt unsatisfied somehow in a way I couldn't always put my finger on.

I think it's a mix of there being too much gated content and not enough challenge once you find a few overpowered items (like the Ether medallion and the invisibility cape).

I finished this right before Ocarina of Time and I couldn't even beat OoT cause it was so disappointing compared to AlttP

early 3D doesn't hand itself too well to Zelda games imo, a lot of the landscapes look very boring and bland in comparison to the lively vibrant coloful areas in ALttP. I dig how they implement the third dimension in dungeons and also the combat feels a bit clunky so I don't know.

The art design was intentionally dark but silly at the same time and it completely missed the mark. Everything they focused on in OoT was to the exact opposite of everything that made the original Zelda games fun in the first place, with the exception puzzles in dungeons. I remember waiting and waiting and waiting for the world to finally open up and to run into all kinds of crazy secrets...it just never happened.

Lolno. The original Zelda had better puzzles, just less filler and more emphasis on finding shit and fighting off enemies.

>"push this block" or "go through this wall"

No, I don't consider those puzzles at all. That's just filler. Having to figure out how to enter a dungeon with only a cryptic message IS a puzzle, and that's something that LoZ does far better than LttP. But no, apparently that's "bullshit you'd need a guide to figure out", even though just about everything in the game can be solved by paying attention and thinking things through.

>> No.5147765

It's not so much filler as "did you remember to check the blocks in this room for secrets?"
Also, you have to clear the enemies in a room before you're allowed to push blocks.
>If you consider "push this block" or "go through this wall" good puzzles, I guess.
If you consider "going through the wall" the actual puzzle in Z1's second quest, you are too stupid to know what a puzzle is and certainly what good level design looks like.

Z1's entire design is centered around a maze of rooms. These rooms are connected by several different types of doors, and deciding which door to take next forms core of the exploratory decision-making, and those decisions often have meaningful consequences (even if it's just causing an earlier room that you have already cleared to respawn its monsters)

I think you've hit the nail on the head. After you've played through it a few times and you know how to solve all the puzzles and mazes, you get the op items quickly and it becomes "press Y to win". Especially if know to use the Ice Rod/Hammer combo on enemies to get magic refill drops.
LttP could have been perfect with slightly nerfed items and I've always felt it sorely needed a second quest.

>> No.5150412

>>5150309
Yeah I just played a randomized ALTTP, which is fun and definitely added some challenge and freshness. But unlike the Zelda 1 Randomizer, which really does feel kind of like a new quest, the ALTTP Randomizer is janky and definitely feels like a playing a randomizer. It's like, I can a find dozen heart containers, the Red Mail, and max sword upgrades-- but no pegasus boots so I still have to walk everywhere and no bow&arrow which means there are some enemies that are simply unkillable.

Still fun of course but not really like a new quest.
