ITT: We post and discuss our favorite zelda temples.

Starting with picrelated. Best music, and funnest puzzles in OOT. I love how immersive its atmosphere is.

The shadow temple is also quite good, but a little overrated I feel. I dislike having to use the hover boots a lot, and unfortunately it involves a lot of that.

To me, it gets points for the perfect creepy setting, and not much else.

I think that while I have to ultimately give it to the Forest Temple, the Water Temple has absolutely fantastic atmosphere, music, visuals, and gameplay and I always enjoy navigating it even though I was one of those guys who got stuck in it for god knows how long back in the day. It's a great dungeon overshadowed by a few issues.

I'd like to have another dungeon in Zelda that goes for a similar ambiance and verticality.

Tidbit on the bgm:

>The theme is based on a motif that revolves around the whole tone scale, which is notorious for sounding ethereal, dream like, or mysterious. What pushes this further is how the whole tone scale moves, and how this song "moves". The whole tone scale gets its name by the notes moving in Whole steps, whereas there are usually Whole and Half steps that give a scale its own unique sound.

>Since the whole tone scale never sounds like there is a tonic (or Root) note, it sounds jarring to the listener. On top of all this, the scale is moving up and down in whole steps, never really solidifying a real Root note, which is why this theme can sound really offputting to people.

Dark Palace, A Link to the Past.

First dungeon of the Dark World and back playing it as a kid, it was a kick right in the teeth after the light world dungeons were all so easy. It was much more complicated, the enemies were hitting me twice as hard, and the creepy new dungeon music got into my head. To top it off, they throw the helmasaur king at you as the boss, who is very visually intimidating and hits like a truck.

I felt incredibly satisfied when i finally beat it, and felt like it set the stage perfectly for how the rest of the game would be. The cake walk was over and it was time for the real challenge.

Though after that everything was easier, maybe with the exception of Thieves Town and Turtle Rock.

Actually each revision of the oot rom on n64 has a build date before the first release of the game in oct 98, but the chant sounded like it was talking about a god so nintendo changed it due to in house policy about religion.

Despite being the “adult” version, I find the Fire Temple far too linear. Dondongo’s is a much easier dungeon but it feels more fun to explore even if it isn’t nearly as large. Fire Temple is practically a straight line that folds up on itself via floors, though it does have a great aesthetic.

I don’t know how I forgot Bottom of the Well. Put it above Dodongo’s but still below the power gap after the top 3. It’s short but extremely fun/spooky.

Fire Temple has always been my favorite. I had the muslim chanting version of the cart, which for me paired really well with the architecture. The temple felt desolate and abandoned for ages, but almost in an “out of time, out of place” sense. Forest Temple was good, and now that I think of it, one of the more jarring shifts in tone for a video game. Water Temple was alright, but it felt claustrophobic to me. I was 7 when I played the game so I never got to play the Shadow Temple since that shit was horrifying to me. I just used my cousin’s save file at the beginning of Ganon’s Tower to finish the game. I know I’ve missed out, but I may buy the 3DS release to play it again.

Overall, Fire Temple is one of my most profound memories with the game and is easily my number one dungeon.

It's just tedious. Just about everything damages you, enemies constantly respawn because the rooms are so small and you constantly move between them, too much back tracking, ruto can despawn as you clear out enemies or look around, you can't attack while carrying her, and the puzzles aren't even a little challenging to figure out, just annoying to pull off. The color scheme can get obnoxious after a while. It's not a bad dungeon, but it has a lot of minor issues that add up. I still like it and they made an effort to make it different from the rest of the game.

I love Forest Temple is simultaneously an atmospheric and creepy place while also literally being a run down mansion in the woods.

I think aesthetically fire temple isn't really that unique.

Forest Temple is spooky and its a large mansion hidden off in the forest.
Shadow Temple is also spooky, but way less reserved about it. Plus it implies some dark history within Hyrule.
Spirit Temple has strong Arabian themes, includes unexplained imagery like the Gerudo Symbols or the Goddess statue

Fire Temple is just kind of "temple, but in a volcano" There's really no individual part of it that really sticks with you (and its most memorable aspect was removed from the game). And unlike Water Temple it isn't a chore to play.

I feel like Fire Temple with the chanting music makes it pretty spooky, not Shadow temple spooky but I think it adds a nice ambiance. I will agree that it isn't a memorable dungeon in terms of gameplay, but I found the temple to be aesthetically pleasing. Its linearity and it's ambiance made it super comfortable for me. Personally it's hard for me to name a favorite temple, my headcanon makes them all equally enjoyable and I really wish the darker sides of things were more explored. Like who builds a manor out in the middle of the woods and leaves it seemingly abandoned? Why is the Fire Temple like a volcanic jail instead of a Goron ground of worship/tomb for Volvagia? Imagination really does play a key part in making this game enjoyable for me.

Honestly I've always really liked Woodfall as well. It isn't my favorite dungeon in the game, hell it's probably lowest on the list, but I still like it a lot and I think it does the best job out of any zelda dungeon when it comes to setting atmosphere with lighting. The shadows in that place are spectacular.

And that one dark hallway where the enemy eyes all light up as you approach. Fucking phenomenal.

Forest Temple is the best dungeon in the series. The design is largely non-linear, allowing the player freedom in how to conquer it, yet everything feels cohesive thanks to each area of the dungeon being interconnected.

There are also a lot of optional treasure chests and other attractions which make the dungeon a bit more fun to explore and add to the replay value. Most of all though, the music, aesthetics and overall atmosphere are nothing short of sublime. You feel like you're in an ancient temple over a crypt that's been forgotten and reclaimed by nature. Just awesome.

Even the path leading to the temple was awesome. Great boss fights and dungeon item too. I always try to put off FT for as long as possible when I play so I can relish it.

I think this video is worth watching. Though I do think the optional rewards are worth more than he credits them for, and I ESPECIALLY think it’s worth noting that you can try to explore parts of dungeons you can’t yet progress in, even when there’s only one ‘road’ to progress. If it’s your first time or you don’t have the dungeon memorized this makes things less straightforward than ‘one path to progress’ implies.

But then shadow temple is my favorite and it’s basically a series of obstacle courses. In it’s case I think the linearity helps it cause you're alsays going deeper, deeper, deeper...

Though oot probably would be better if more dungeons were less linear. I just don’t think it’s ALWAYS the right way to do things.

Stalfos aren’t really hard, just tedious if you aren’t willing to experiment how to get around their shields.

I think the dungeons must have been balanced around the player only collecting heart containers and zero heart pieces/bottles or something, because damage scaling in this game is fucked. Fire temple is mostly obstacle based and water has the clams and metal balls but is more puzzle focused. Shadow and spirit are the most dangerous before Ganon’s but only spirit really makes use of enemies, shadow is mostly obstacles and visibility tricks.

Also I think Ganons Castle is kinda underrated. It’s obviously chopped up beta content but it still feels interesting to me. Fans in the forest stand-in, light dungeon existing a little bit, going back to ice instead of water, I think that as far as ‘throwback’ end dungeons go it’s about as good as they get, though I understand why someone would want something wholly original.

The whole concept is unrealistic and retarded, the puzzles are tedious as fuck, babysitting fishpussy gets old quick, and the aesthetics are the most banal in the entire series -- one red fish gut texturing the entirety of the dungeon, with equally boring and derivative enemy designs to boot. That's true.
Mermaid's Cave from Oracle of Ages also had an interesting concept to it, though I wish it were more of a thing throughout the game where a lot of the dungeons would have both a Past and a Present version. Would've been neat. Perhaps a bit too much work to actually do that, but it'd have been cool to have to do more and more brain work as the game progressed, having to think about increasing amounts of things that doing stuff in the Past would affect in the Present.
I hope whatever they decide to make after Breath of the Wild has some really interesting ideas behind them, because exploring something like Skull Woods in 3D would probably be amazing. I guess they've already brought Mermaid's Cave to 3D with that dungeon(mini dungeon?) in Skyward Sword with the mine carts, which was cool. Oh, and the ship in the desert. More streamlined, but the idea is basically the same.
If anything, though, I'd just like grottos to be brought back to the overworld.
