That BIOS intro screen was showing off the Sega CD's hardware scaling and rotation effects with the logo's, while playing a music track sequenced through the Sega CD's 8-channel PCM audio chip.

I liked the BIOS 1 US screen more.

The Sega CD is really underrated hardware. It's a shame it flopped.

I was a bit disappointed that Sega highlighted sprite scaling as one of its features and never made a port of Outrun, Space Harrier or some of their other super scaler arcade games for it.

Core Designs did some neat things with the scaling hardware.

The really devastating bit of technical information about the Sega CD is that it could have literally been like 5x as powerful if Sega only made two TINY changes to the Mega Drive's motherboard.

The first change would have been to hook the VDP's color palette pin to the expansion slot.

The second change would have been to hook the VDP's additional VRAM pin to the expansion slot.

Had Sega done this then 1) the Sega CD could display 4096 colors on screen out of a palette of 32 768, 2) the system could have 128 KB of VRAM instead of just 64 KB, and 3) the Sega CD wouldn't be subject to the stupid bandwidth / bus contention issues with the main system since it could write directly to the additional 64 KB of VRAM.

Those two things were leftovers from the C2 arcade board right. Hindsight's 50/50

The color palette pin might be, but not the additional VRAM pin. It was always intended to equip the Genesis with 128 KB of VRAM right out of the box but due to the RAM prices skyrocketing just before release it was downgraded to 64 KB.

Turned out to be an absolutely massive fucking waste of transistors because the VDP actually has an entire separate memory bus for that extra RAM. So having an extra 64 KB of VRAM for a total of 128 KB doubles memory bandwidth too. You could have legitimately called the Genesis a mini Neo Geo had Sega implemented it.

Sucks, I had a similar reaction reading about the SNES sprite size limitation thing where it cannot combine more than two sprite sizes at once due to a planned backwards compatibility with the NES.

>> No.5374589

>>5374582
Yeah unfortunately everything about the SNES other than the background engine and the sound subsystem reek of NES backwards compatibility, in a bad way.

I just woke up from a dream where I was physically trapped in the Sega CD Boot Screen, and each additional copy of the Sega logo that appeared caused a loud Sega chant to be emitted.
It was a deafening cacophony of Segas everywhere. I eventually begun to give in to the madness and started screaming "SE-GAAAAAA" from the top of my lungs myself.
what the fuck
