Makes me kind of sad that they made this game at the very start of the Buu saga instead of waiting for DBZ to be over and doing it then. The Butouden games are decently fun, but this one's got such a shit roster that it's hard for me to get interested in it.

Yeah but by the time it was over, they were already making the horrid Ultimate Battle 22 and Shin Butoden. At least we got Hyper Dimension.
I don't mind the roster of Butoden 3 actually, although it would have been nice to also have Videl.

I know, I just mentioned the only non-retro DBZ game I played. Well, I also played a bit of Battle of Z and didn't like it.

i had a french emulator too back in the day. The only thing that sucked is there was no sort of progression system or story mode to beat. So I only ever just fought against ai of my choosing or awkwardly shared the keyboard when a friend came over.

Maybe he's talking about Butoden 3, which infamously lacks a story mode, it's just a VS game.
But the gameplay is fairly good, which is what most japanese players cared about at the time, even though in the end, Butoden 2 prevailed as the most popular one.

It's the only DBZ game from 5th gen that I enjoyed. Gameplay is fairly shallow, mostly button mashing all the time with the occassional character switch, but it's interesting due to being unique.
The game "Battle of Z" released some years ago was like a spiritual sequel to Legends, but without the SOUL.

I bought this because at the time, it was the only DBZ game that let you play as Super Buu, and he's my favorite. It was a shit game, but I liked it for that purpose only and ended up playing it a ton regardless.

Pretty amazing to me that anyone would make such a slow, floaty fucking game past SNES era.

The meat of these games is playing VS with friends, as every other fighting game.
However, Super Butoden 2's story mode is really good, a shame they never replicated that.

I didn't understand shit, but I kept seeing darker palette swaps of the characters fighting me, and later the normal character talking to me, so I guess the "evil clone" plot for fighting games is older than I thought?

Yeah, you fight evil clones commanded by boujack and zangya. If you win against them, you go to the Broly chapter, if you lose you go to a chapter about a tower of energy that boujack makes to steal all human energy.

I haven't player this since I was a kid and I was easily satisfied with pretty much anything back then but I remember loving it. The fact that it had sort of "3D" cut scenes for special attacks was super cool to me. Multiple characters fighting at once was awesome too.

Did anyone else play any of the games before knowing what Dragon Ball actually was?
I remember goint to the video rental store in like 1993 and seeing pic related on the TV, and 2 guys there were playing against each other. I remember my 7 year old self being fascinated with these weird characters, their ability to fly and throw gigantic, flashy hadou-kens. I feel that after getting so used to Dragon Ball to the point Son Goku is a pop culture icon and is almost impossible to not be familiar with it, we take it for granted, but Dragon Ball really has unique and weird as fuck designs. I loved that alien feeling of slowly becoming familiar with all these odd characters. Then some time later, the original Dragon Ball aired on TV, and many years later (like 5 years later) DBZ finally appeared on TV and I could understand who all these characters from the video game I saw back then were.

>> No.5482406

>>5482387
I've always knew what dragon ball was because I don't live in America.

>> No.5482432

>>5482387
Well, I played Hyper Dimension and Ultimate Battle 22 while the original Dragon Ball was being aired for the first time here in Brazil, in mid-90's. UB22 was the very first Playstation game I ever played.

I understood that time passed and Goku grew up, but I couldn't actually locate who was Goku, as I didn't recognize the blonde Super Saiyan form as Goku. Also, I found some characters really boring, as I was expecting cool characters like Giran, Roshi and Mercenary Tao.

>>5482387
>>5482432
While I was watching original DB I played Super Butoden 2. I was really confused about the characters, I remember when I got to pick a character, I was looking for Goku and he was simply not there, so I supposed maybe Vegeta was Goku, even though he had a different hair, it's the one that looked more like Goku, because the others were Piccolo, Trunks and Gohan, I knew Goku was supposed to be adult, although I wondered who this other spiked hair kid was, I didn't know who any of these characters were, at the time, not even the Piccolo saga was on TV, still on Red Ribbon.
It was kind of surreal. Later I saw Goku appear during the cutscenes, and I was really confused as to why I couldn't play as him. I ended up playing as Trunks the most though.
Many years later I found out there was a secret code to unlock Goku and Broly.
Speaking of Super Butoden 2, seeing the cutscenes not understanding the context was the weirdest shit, but somehow stimulating, I remember wondering what the fuck happened when Cell transformed into a giant bomb and Goku transports him to Kaio's planet, then Cell reappearing with all that dramatic music. Good shit. I was mesmerized.

I have yet to play the first Gokuden game, but I played the 2nd one. Really odd game but also engaging, it's really only for fans of Dragon Ball though, unless you really dig the combat system, which I still am not 100% sure how it works, although I managed to customize my move pool a bit.
The best thing about it for me was the quiz parts with the different alternate scenarios and bad endings, as well as the music. Very comfy game.
