This games was one of the few games I had growing up over the years (others I remember were tiny toon adventure, smb 1 + duck hunt, smb 2 & 3, tmnt 2 & 3, mega man 3 & 4, captain skyhawk, hydlide, castlevania 2 and Dr. Mario).
As you did back then, you had to replay the same games over and over again, since you only got like 2 games a year (birthday/christmas), so there was a lot of time you spent with those games. I wasn't allowed to play as much as I wanted, remember Ing how the ins and outs of the games are were important, you didn't want to waste your playtime at the exact pit over and over again and game over only to have to wait again until you can play the next time.
So this actually made me quite good at most of the games I owned, I beat the smb's, the mega men, tiny toons,... But there were some of them that always kept me hanging.
Hydlide Was just a piece of shit where I did not know what the fuck I am doing, same goes for cv2. Captain skyhawk wasn't my cup of tea. And zelda 2...well... I played it a lot, but never beat it. Back then I have already known zelda 1 from a neighbours house and really adored it, really looked like something I wanted to play. Zelda 2 on the other Hand... Was somehow eerie to me, I always feeled uncomfertable in that world.
You always had a felling of danger and losging control the moment you stepped out of the temple, the Monsters running you down and suddenly you are swarmed from both sides, the first cave made me shit my pants cause I saw something move in the dark. It was scary to play that game, and I don't even think I enjoyed it that much because of it... But you had to play it again since it is one of those games you never have beaten.
Back in the day I think I managed to get right before the rafting section towards east before I stopped playing for years. When I was 12 I got zelda 1 and never looked back. But years later I actually found interest in playing it again and really liked it, nowadays it's one of my favorites

My thoughts exactly. There's some bullshit things about TAOL in the same vain as Simon's Quest when it comes to things that one may require a walk-through or could have been communicated better, but at least with this game it's things that are like "oh okay, I should have noticed that", like every town having a hidden wizard that gives you a new power, opposed to the "WHAT THE FUCK, HOW WOULD ANYONE HAVE THOUGHT TO DO THIS?!" factor of Simon's Quest.

not him, but for a serious response, I would say the graphics in LoZ are better than AoL. The designs for the first game are iconic and memorable. The graphics hold up and look good today despite being old. Part of it is because LoZ didn't try to be an RPG and portray anything but elements of the gameworld. LoZ didn't try to portray a town. NPCs were just tiny sprites with text.

Meanwhile The graphics in AoL don't hold up. AoL tried to portray a lot more and didn't quite get there. Link looks gay and townspeople look weird. Many enemies look weird with the limited color palettes.

So sure, it looked fine for its time. But I'd probably appreciate a remake with better graphics. Meanwhile, LoZ doesn't need a remake with better graphics, its graphics are perfectly suited to it.

As someone who doesn't have nostalgia goggles for either game I think both games look fine in their own way. Zelda 2 went for something like an RPG adventure while LoZ kept the designs minimalistic which worked on its own. I also disagree with you about Zelda 2 looking worse, if anything I think it's great to see some of the enemies in a side point of view instead of top down like the goriya and I like how the different view makes for a different way of controlling Link and defeating enemies while still be challenging without overdoing it.

Some stuff is pretty dumb though like finding that medicine or taking water and giving it to a thirsty girl - yes I know we're talking about a game that's over 30 years old and from an era where console games or anything that wasn't PC adventure games or CRPGs at this point barely had a deeper plot than "save the damsel in distress as the heroic knight" but come on couldn't they've come up with ANYTHING better than that?? Also, knockback can be incredibly annoying combined with the lives system when you have to backtrack all the way to the kasuto area. Nitpicking aside I feel the graphics hold up really well and it looks even better than some later NES games like TMNT or Megaman 2 IMO.

point is that AoL link is a relatively crude and awkward sprite compared to LoZ link.

Yeah, yeah. There's parts of Simon's Quest I would argue the game itself just never would tell or insinuate to you how to do, and you're basically expected to be reading a guide or be told by someone who did, while Adventure Of Link never feels like it's so cryptic that you couldn't ever figure it out without a guide.

Adding to that:
Most people never figured out what the white crystal does because they already have it selected when they go to the first mansion, so they don't realize the lift at the start was originally invisible.
Because of this, they very specifically connect the crystals with "selecting them from the menu, then ducking", because that's what they had to do the last time they were told to go somewhere with a specific colored crystal
So when they're told to go to the cliff with a specific colored crystal, and nothing happens when they go there, OFCOURSE they're going to try ducking.

I never even realized this was possible to get stuck on. It's obvious as all hell.

You're told to take a red crystal there and hit the cliff with your head to make a hole.
The thing is, if you were playing games back then you were accustomed to such janglish and other popular games, and would have done the following in order:
1. Look for a way to Mario punch the cliff from below.
This is impossible since there's no way to get under the cliff, so next you would:
2. Look for a way to get Simon's head as close to the cliff as possible.
Crouching accomplishes this, and worked previously with the blue crystal so you crouch and wait a few seconds and bam, magic tornado.
On a completely unrelated note, scoring well on an IQ test is not about getting the correct answer so much as it is about figuring out the rules behind the question, at which point the answer becomes trivial.

>> No.5634932

A case can certainly be made for it. If you play Zelda for combat and challenge it's certainly the best by far. If you play for exploration and secrets it's not the best but it's not bad. If it's a combination of those things that you play for, then a case can certainly be made for it, it all comes down to personal taste at that point because the first three games are just that good.

It feels small even with both words taken into account. Even if it technically has more space than the original game (and I would dispute that), it could still have been bigger and I'd have enjoyed it more. Also, the map could have had a better layout. Part of the reason the world feels small is that you have these huge sections of the map occupied by places you rarely visit or even pass through (such as the castle or the forest).

Still though, I think the problem would have been better solved by just increasing the size of the map by like 15-20% (and adding interesting content appropriately).
