Anyone else not understand why every crummy homebrew release for a retro system needs a physical cartridge when they could just put the ROM on Steam or something?

>> No.5692383

It's mostly to prove that these games are in fact developed for old systems and not just a modern game that looks old, which has happened in the past decade. Today's hot trend is making retro styled fpses (strange when the pc market was never as mainstream as the console market, but these releases imply otherwise), eventually you'll see someone make a windows 95 game for a pentium and voodoo 2.

>they could just put the ROM on Steam or something
that defeats the purpose of what they're doing. Thy want to make something that runs on original limited hardware. Some release the roms to be played with flambarts,

But you could put the ROM on an Everdrive if you wanted to run it on a real machine.

>> No.5692415

Don't they make these things by mutilating old sports game cartridges or something?

LOL... Flambarts.

I don't know about the NES homebrews, but both of those Atari 2600 releases aren't crummy by any stretch of the imagination.

Homebrew for retro specced PCs has already been a thing for awhile.

The Boulder Dash one annoys me because they basically cucked themselves to the original publisher (First Star Software) who have been known to be _very_ anal about people downloading ROMs of their old shit.

Of course so is Nintendo but at least they have an actual legacy as a company worthy of respect unlike simply buying and publishing a couple of games in the 80s that bedroom coders wrote and sold to them.

They did put the rom on steam tho. These are for collectorfags, who make up a decent chunk of retro gamers.

>> No.5692742

The rom will just get dumped and distributed immediately no matter what they do they should just embrace it

>Release rom for free on site
>Generate rng+encrypted checksum for every new game
>Include a savestate of the completed game with your order for 20% discount and iron on patch!

Reminder that First Star were caught selling a C64 Classic Games CD that had cracked versions of the games they got off the Internet and just included a scripting engine with CCS64 to skip over the crack screen.

Yeah Im not advocating anyone buy his stuff only that it exists.

What do you mean?

>> No.5692884

>>5692863
Like I said, First Star are a nobody publisher more or less who had a couple mid-80s hits with computer games they bought from the original authors and they've also acted super butthurt about people downloading the shit.

That's annoying but these guys doing this homebrew Boulder Dash didn't have to suck their dick and ask for permission for it. That's just fueling their egos. They should have just done the goddamn thing and released the ROM for free like that C64 SMB.

>> No.5692893

>>5692268
They did just that though?
Even sold the ROM by itself if you prefer to play or your own emulator, the cart was just another option.

They wanted to do a physical release and I kind of agree that FSS did at some point realize they could cynically milk retro gamers for money.

The Boulder Dash situation is a tragedy. Fuck First Star. I wish somebody would dump and leak the ROM somewhere.

Now I just wish all these doom or quake wannabe "retro fpses" with ironically shitty models and ironically 10fps animations would run on appropriate hardware and not on a system that should obliterate Crysis.

>> No.5692938

Actually it turns out First Star was bought out last year by Germany-based BBG Entertainment.

Spy vs Spy isn't among the listed games because it's a licensed title.
