Keyboard is better for 2D gaming than controllers.
There is literally zero loss in precision compared to a d-pad, and it's a hundred times more comfortable.
If you're using an emulator and a controller, unless you're playing 3D games that require a joystick's precision, you're just a moron.

>> No.5878067

Arcade stick is superior to either.

>> No.5878070

Problem with keyboards is you get instant access to quicksave, quickload keys. Always hated how emulators will set unbindable hotkeys to page up, delete, insert, etc.

>> No.5878075

I mean it's fine for 4th gen and below but if you're planning on trying out anything after that specially Chinese PC ports just get a goddamn joystick dude, it's cheap and will save you so much trouble in the long run. Try playing Oratorio Tangram on keyboard and tell me it doesn't make you wanna kill yourself.

>> No.5878080

Meh. I can use both and it's really only a matter of what you're used to. People saying 'you can't play platformers with a keyboard, you must have a controller!' are retards though, and I almost never hear that crap from those preferring keyboards. Yeah, you've played games with a controller your whole life, you can't use a keyboard on the same level, no shit.

How much is mechanical keyboard, 150$? Way to kill the cost benefit of keyboards over joysticks, might as well buy a cheap used Xbox360 pad.
The only interesting aspect of mechanical keyboards is the anti-ghosting capability which varies wildly depending on the brand, something you have for free on pads.

Elaborating, To do a dashing weapon3 attack on virtual on you need to press
>X (left dash) or Y (right dash)
>L + R (wpn1+wpn2)
All while holding a diagonal direction so that's 2 extra keys you have to hold,
Technically possible on keyboard if you work around ghosted keys but have fun with that.

I've used the same mechanical for 10 years and it cost me 75 bucks. You have options just like you do with arcade sticks, ie. you could spend hundreds for a top of the line qanba. Mechanical KB also has more than just a stick and 8 buttons, and you can use it with a mouse for PC games or just for typing/work/etc where the arcade stick's main advantage is you can use it on consoles, assuming you get a model for each console or build in that one custom adapter and fabricate cords for every relevant system you want.

Arcade sticks are good too, but a keyboard is basically just a superior arcade stick in its definition. Use case for arcade stick where keyboard is inferior are, as pointed out, limited to special circumstances. Ultimately you should make your decision based on what your use case is, but surely you can't deny that for the uses available, a mechanical keyboard will outperform an arcade stick.

I understand your point and all but I don't really care about any of the ergonomics benefits of a mechanical keyboard. I don't think a 75 dollar keyboard has decent anti-ghosting either.

>> No.5878152

>>5878136
Mine is n-key rollover so no ghosting at all. Only bother with it is that I opted for blue switches, which is only annoying now as I start to play games with voice chat a little more. I don't think I'll be able to convince you as you seem stubborn like the other people who argue about their love of controllers/keyboards/etc. so I'm exiting. Just letting you know there are worlds of options, so don't hold yourself back for your own stubbornness. That goes to anybody here who perched on one option and spurns the rest.

Counterpoint: Landstalker. Every person who has played this game on a keyboard first has complained about the controls. There is nothing wrong with the controls, you just need the right tool for the job and a keyboard ain't it.

Controllers are designed to be held in a hand so you can play from a chair or couch.
A keyboard is designed to send many different signals as quickly as possible.
Note how one allows you to use all your fingers while the other is restricted to your thumbs and possibly index fingers.

I have spent a long time playing Wing Commander 2 and X-Wing with the tactile+clicky "space invaders" keys but I read they are much better with flight sticks. I would say that it was fine for even some games like Star Control 2 and Civilization, but some games I would say are enhanced by their unique control scheme. I would rather play DDR with a dance mat rather than a keyboard. The Virtual On twinsticks are inefficient compared to a 360 controller, but I prefer playing it with the twinsticks. Samba De Amigo is a better experience with the Maracas controllers than with a keyboard. Punchmania is not as fun without the mechanical pads. Light guns are still great fun that cannot be replicated with a keyboard-mapped controls. I would say it depends on the game and person what controller is better. I've played a lot of Wolf3D and Doom with the keyboard, even some platformers like Halloween Harry with it, but sometimes control pads work better.
