How did this simple "into the screen" formula 1 racing game go from this...

to this?

The cars are a mix of Night Rider and the DeLorean from Back to the Future 2. Though this show was released a year before Back to the Future, so it did the foldable 'hover tire' thing first. It's the least faithful adaption of a video game I have ever seen, but I do like the insane concept.

Also, /VR/ approved games adapted to other media thread?

This oddity of animation. What a strange thing to try to adapt to a daytime children's cartoon.
There is a theory that the characters in this universe are doppelgangers of the real DS.

the flying delorean was shown at the end of part 1 of back to the future so you are talking non sense,it was just a money grab americans tried to do with nippon games since they only needed the "permission" to use the title the rest didn't matter, did you forget the robotech shit americans did.
we never forget.

Interestingly, the car designs are the work of Shinji Aramaki. Best known for Appleseed 2004, also worked out Bubblegum Crisis and MOSEADA as mechanical designer. He also worked on Captain Power, another 80s US property.

You seem to misunderstand. The simple fact that the game WAS so simple is why they had to actually go to outlandish ends to make an entertaining show. If the game has no plot or characters or guidelines then the writers really have to make something stand out. Im at complete loss as to the monkey though.

Honestly, a tuned up version of this premise would make for a genuinely interesting show.

>Son and daughter of a famous racing star mysteriously dies right before winning the Triple Crown
>They discover a tape (clearly part of a series of tapes) from their father's will that implies that he had accidentally stumbled upon a sinister secret in the world Motorsports and may have been killed to keep it a secret
>Using every shred of knowledge, skill, and technique in the art of racing, the siblings follow their father's footsteps to uncover his killer and the secret he died for
>Accompanied by their trusty mechanic, his young daughter, and her cat, they fight every day in the shadows and behind the wheel to keep their Pole Position

>Japanese M.A.S.K.
>Legitimately good quality animation just for some throwaway video game adaptation
>Characters actually drawn as people
Why is 80's anime so much more kino than anything else

The japs haven't had a problem of churning out hundreds of mangas/animes about simple sports. They could've just made a generic formula 1 anime and slapped the pole position logo on it. We should be thankful they made this weird monstrosity instead though. The world is so much richer for it.
