Currently playing Phantasy Star 4. It was pretty boring at first but now I like it. My only complaint is that I have to look at the manual a lot to figure out what each tech or skill does. Wish they had enough room to write what each spell did. Is it worth trying Phantasy Star 3 after this?

The original JRPG heroine. Playing through it on the switch for the first time in a really long time. It's still a decent game all these year later, such a shame the series died after IV, though the original PSO was a great game. Used to play a hunewearl.

The game is very flawed but the generation system and the tech system are really neat. I'd say give it a whirl but don't feel you need to stumble through without a guide, check out what everything does because it's not stated anywhere ingame, you'll have a much nicer time that way. Also the beginning of the game is a little opaque on what you're supposed to do, so look out for that.

I know there's fan translations/edits for some of the other main games but are they recommended? Sounds like the PS2 one is pretty error filled.

Also is there any set of translations which will keep consistency between character names? I know characters from e.g. PS1 are mentioned in later games but different translations use different names sometimes.

Or are the official releases just fine for the later games?

The PS2 'retranslation' is mostly just the official one with a few fixes to make naming consistant with other gamesx in the series, and restores some lost NPC dialogue that was just repeats of ealier text in the original translation. It doesn't work on real hardware, but if you're playing on emulator it doesn't take anything away from the game, it's a mild (very mild) improvement.

Using the retranslations for 1 and 2 the naming is fairly consistant between between them and the official translation of 4, barring some alternate spelling.

The Playstation 2 Phantasy Star collection includes the option to boost exp and money earned. There's a patch for Phantasy Star 2 here which replicates at least one variant of that setting: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/924/

But yeah I agree, would be cool to see a Switch port similar in style to the PS1 port. there's at least two romhack authors I'm aware of who've attempted to instill some kind of consistency between the 3 sequels by using already established names and terms in the official localizations when updating text, usually taking from the first game or adopting what the last game in the series established. Though what they choose to incorporate into their hacks can be hit or miss, depending on the term:

>"Peloriemate" is a consumable item in Phantasy Star that could be purchased in most towns. It restored 10 HP and was described to be some kind of energy-bar type snack food. In the official localization, it's name (which was a pun on Caloriemate, a popular energy bar in Japan) was changed to "Cola" presumably due to the west's unfamiliarity of said pun and was depicted as such in manuals.

>In the NA version of PSIV, "Perolymate" appears in a shop in Termi and appears to be the new localization term for Peloriemate. It can be bought and used to complete a sidequest where one participant will exclaim, "Hey! You're holding a Perolymate! Does that bring back memories! That has high nutritional value! I used to eat those back in the old days!"

>perolymate is used to revive a girl who is malnourished in a PSIV sidequest
>hack turns the item into a soft drink as it was depicted in localized PS1

I guess. Seems strange though: characters start with their full complement of spells already (they never learn anything new), the only thing that changes is their relative strength which is mostly determined by paying 10 meseta to adjust their stats (max being dependant on character level) and "putting all points" into one tech exclusively severely diminishes the power of another in the same group. And of course all spells in a group cost the same TP regardless of their strength.

It's different, I'll give it that. Seems more like something you'd see in a western rpg. I guess I can see the utility in customizing characters to be more proficient in one area only if they want to give them roles: do you want Mieu to be a better party healer or make it so reviving a character from death fully heals them?

Also, FUCK Anti and other spells in games that can fail multiple times in a row.

Oh my god no.
I'm a PS lifer who's played the games since I was little.
I like PS3 because of it provides expansion of the lore of the series.
It doesn't deserve the hate it gets but gameplay-wise it's very unlike the other games. As a video game it's inferior to the others.

Start with PS1 or PS4. PS4 being the most fun game of the series and the most noob friendly.
PS4 also combines all of the best elements of the previous games and expands upon them

These are the ones that go the furthest. There's also a few small patches that tweak battle rewards to reduce grind and making your characters walk faster. There used to be one that fixed the wonky scrolling camera, but it's been removed. Probably because it was buggy. Maybe one day someone will redo it, I've always hated how you had to walk to the near edge of the screen before the camera would follow you. Secret of Mana has the same issue.

Only PS1 requires a retranslation patch. PS2 retranslaton is worse than original translation, I don't know about any translation improvements of 3 and 4 is fine by itself.
So either play Master System version of1 with retranslation patch or Sega Ages PS1 on Switch. It has original translation, but adds many QoL things. Yes, I completed PS Generation 2 today and was thinking exactly this. You are a powerful wizard and have a mansion full of maybe not full-fledged espers, but acolytes who are still capable of doing something, and yet you only send other friends of Eusis to fight this hopeless fight.
The only reason I can think of is that he thinks his life and memories (which are still not preserved in a crystall ball) are more important for the future of Algo. Dark Force is already defeated in this 1000 years cycle, Mother Brain is destroyed and even if Eusis and his party die fighting Earthlings, they will still deal them damage Earthlings won't be able to recover from. I used to be friends with a dude online who was into perler bead shit for vidya. He also wanted to be a successful amateur wrestler, oddly enough.

normally this is when someone comes in and reposts a bunch of Iseken/Iskun art but these threads get plenty of that already... so I'll share this instead

Getting close to wrapping up my playthrough of Phantasy Star III. Went Rhys -> Ayn -> Sean/Crys (yeah, I'm doing both of them). Up to the point where you have to gather up the legendary weapons so that they can be strengthened even further. Realizing that the hack I've been playing with probably makes battles effortless due to giving all of Wren's guns past his initial equipment the ability to strike an entire row of enemies. I thought attack magic in this game was already pointless in the vanilla game but at least you were able to shore up damage to get rid of mobs, now it's pretty much worthless as Wren does most of the heavy lifting now.

Not that I'm complaining. Anything that makes the tedious battles go by quicker is a good thing... just didn't expect it to be a complete cakewalk. Oh well. Guess I'll be firing up PSIV sooner rather than later.
