Is there a way to, say, map Select + L1 to register as an L2 press so that I can play PlayStation games with an SNES controller?

That sounds fuckin dreadful, just get a good modern pad dude

PS1 pad is just an SNES pad with two extra buttons - half the games don't even use those buttons, and a good chunk of the other half only use them rarely.

PS1 games on a PSP face the same issue, only two shoulder buttons there yet it's considered the ultimate port machine.

You try every combination imaginable and guess what? It's down and R! WHY R?!

Retroarch supports this at least. I don’t think ePSXe, PCSX or xebra do however.

thanks for the advice, guess I have to stop being a pleb and still using my 2001 emu set

PS1 flat out has more buttons than the SNES. There will be no comfortable way to make up for the shortage. The short answer is don't.

Probably will need to adjust them on a per-game basis, but try using Start and Select as L1/2 and R1/2, and map the Start and Select buttons to something on the keyboard.
