It's one of those where they pumped up the difficulty on the american release because rental fears. Original japanese or difficulty patch fixes most issues. It's a really great game but they went a bit off the deep end on the difficulty in places.

Theres a trick to dd1 nes. In stage 2, you do the first climb then you have to get the bat, then you have to scroll the screen just right and it gives an invisible enemy with infinite respawning. You can max out xp and unlock all the moves.

Same. I definitely took longer to be able to beat DD2 than DD. I feel that for most of the game, DD is one of those games where knowing what to do is more important than having flawless execution, whereas DD2 starts getting really punishing much earlier.

I once thought as you do, but once I realized the key was to get six hearts before the two Abobos in level 3, it was a much simpler task.

Just punch everyone, no kicks except for bosses and to disarm, until you hit about five hearts.

I played the SMS version a lot when I was like four or five. Pretty sure it's the first game I ever beat, though I played it with a friend. Yes the lack of hit stun is annoying, you pretty much have to jump kick everyone all the time because it's the only safe way to hit enemies.
At least it has two players though. The NES version is missing the Double in Double Dragon.
