Is there some point to this thing? I like the database of box art, but you view that in a browser here https://gamesdb.launchbox-app.com/
Unless the program can sort games by year/publisher there's no reason to even install it.

Not quoted but it's nice for having all your emu shit in one place and pretty much the only alternative that seems to work with everything that can be launched straight into a game from cmd.
It used to be slow it became better after the dev took time to improve performance.
I only use the free version though. Premium seems more if you want the Big Box arcade/TV frontend, using a controller to select games, themeing and saving arbitrary filters based on game dev and stuff like that.

I don't even remember what features the premium version has. I just remember being annoyed by the paywall when I tried the free version.

Does it even do anything that isn't already covered by Playnite? I think Launchbox is more geared towards emulators, but I know Playnite has some emulator-related features too.

No need to lie anon Launchbox can definitely sort with those options, at least it can now. I'm not going to try to shill this to anyone but I enjoy the program. I payed for it at a time when it was basically this, hyperspin, or trying to set up everything through Steam and I tried it free first and found it the easiest to import my romset to and I found the BigBox TV frontend appealing so I paid for it. There may be better alternatives out there now and I would recommend researching all of your options but I've never regretted the purchase and the program still gets frequent updates as well as the database, even most well known romhacks are in there with custom boxart and such. Miles better than fucking around with Retroarch playlists and manually loading roms for every emulator. At the very least I recommend a frontend whatever you choose.

Worth it for the database integration. Can unify all your games' launchers and emulators in one program. Easy to toss in custom options for games that need 'em. Paired with an EmuMovies account it's pretty sweet to load this up on your living room TV via a Steam Link and play the retro vidya with a bro.

I just read about Launchbox for the first time, are they making people pay for a frontend that only runs emulators and modern games, or does it have any features that separates it from other frontends that are free?

>> No.7122494

>>7122469
As far as I know, the base program is free, but you have to pay for the "Big Box" mode which is meant for things like Mame cabinets.

>> No.7122517

>>7122494
Big box mode for MAME sounds neat but I'm sure as shit not going to pay some dudes for what passionate programmers will do for free. Is there anything else that they do differently from a front loader like RetroArch (yeah I know) other than the modern game support and the cool MAME big box mode?

>> No.7122524

>>7122517
It's not even meant to replace something like RetroArch. Most people are actually using it in conjunction with RetroArch. It's not even an emulator, it just shows you your rom folder in a fancy interface and then boots up the emulator(s) you have set up in conjunction with it.

>> No.7122540

>>7122524
yep, it;s what I use it for, organise all my stuff with launchbox and use mostly retroarch for emulation

>or does it have any features that separates it from other frontends that are free?
Mostly that it actually works fairly painfree and has a cover art database with some extras for Mame and stuff.
Pretty much all the alternatives last I checked were outright painful & easily broken while setting up in contrast while launchbox just has you run a wizard or two and add in the categories you want.

>> No.7122550

>>7122541
It’s a launcher frontend to have all your thousands of games/movies/etc organized and in one place and it’s free.
If you pay-up you have a hasslefree way for an arcade build frontend or playing on your couch/TV.

That’s about it.

I think I've heard it slows down quite a bit with larger libraries, so keep that in mind if you want to add a lot of games - which is kind of the main point isn't it? But I guess it's pretty user friendly as far as setup goes and quite customizable in how it looks.

How is it piracy to "copy bread" when you own the entire world? If someone used the recipe and stole the credit from Jesus for it, that would fit better into the analogy. Pretty good and interesting analogy, regardless, but it would fit better if the subject was someone else giving up the bread owner's goods rather than the bread owner, himself, charitably giving away his own goods.

i love launchbox but the premium price became a bit high over the years.

the main appeal is automatically finding and downloading game information/images from databases and automating shit that can make booting some games a chore.
like i used to use batch files to mount cds and auto launch xpadder and whatnot, but with launchbox you just figure that shit out once and you're done.
i play so many more games than I used to because they became easier to get running.

another thing is the custom themes and being able to edit everything about it, which is pretty nice.
