What do you consider to be the most beautiful older 2D arcade game?

My vote is for OutRun, it's just breathtaking in motion.

Outrun has a great soundtrack, but in terms of graphics, it's not that impressive. WEC Le Mans 24 looked better.

While Outrun is certainly among the most fun, you need to look into more 90s super scaler games, because there are tons of them with improved graphics over Outrun, which was one of the first.

Funny you make this thread. I downloaded Cannonball recently to replay this gem. People discuss whether video games can be considered art and I believe that Outrun is a good nomination. If you were able to get an art critic to play Outrun for 10-15 minutes, I'd like to think they would come away after taking in the composition as a whole and talk in-depth of how all the elements combine to evoke feelings in the participant.

I think Space Harrier is very exciting to play and watch. You really feel like you're GOING FAST. However, vector games are still perhaps the most beautiful.

personally I don't think it looks great either way, it's impressive to see so much sprite scaling going on but I still find it very jarring.

same thing with Thunder Force 4 personally, it gets mentioned as one of the best-looking Genesis/MD games all the time because of all the parallax and multi-sprite enemies, but I find it visually noisy... the bullets, explosions, enemies, backgrounds etc just run together for me. jmo
