Neat idea, but it's really dull. The game makes you think there's going to be this Metal Gear Solid style storyline and then after just a bit they stop doing anything interesting.

Thing is the first BattleTanx game was meh. My mates and I had great fun in the multiplayer, but that was about it. Only three tank types (Two really, one was worthless in single player), dull levels, dull music, it was a slog to play through.

Global Assault was an upgrade in every way and is a fucking great game. Better multiplayer, powerups, tanks, and levels. It turned a meh game into an amazing one.

I rented this game to play one weekend but could never get far due to its janky camera. The thing gave me motion sickness and I stopped playing after the horror movie level. Very mediocre IMO, but then again that was just the first two levels.

As for other underappreciated games though; I always liked Bomberman Hero better than the other two, and thought Chameleon Twist was pretty rad. Never played the second one though.

Plebs really try hard to like N64 games because so much of it's library is shit.

We really didn't have much to choose from back then but i was lucky enough to also have other better consoles. Quest 64 (which should have been called Holy Magic Century) carries a very peculiar kind of nostalgia for those who played it through all the way. It oozes so much potential, even in its released form, which was so clearly still in alpha at best. The cities and countrysides are pretty, if unpolished, the dungeons look like they had the potential to be extremely fun if refined, and everywhere you look there's evidence that the devs had so much planned for the game.

Look at Princess Flora in Dondoran, and Leonardo in Normoon. Their models make it obvious they were going to be party members. Glencoe Forest and Shamwood are these massive, yet completely off the beaten path optional areas where stuff was clearly supposed to happen, but the game was booted out the door just to line the N64's anemic roster of games.

The game will never be good, unless some super dedicated autists get ahold of the source code and mod it harder than Morrowind, but what's there showed such promise. The graphics are pretty nice for an early N64 game, the soundtrack is great, some of the cities and regions (even if unfinished) are downright gorgeous, and the magic system had loads of potential, especially if paired with some kind of combo system with other party members. Most of the enemy models were impressive as well, especially the bosses. I mean, how many games had you fighting a hulking ogre scientist?

I think I only bought eight games for the N64, and by god there were games I wanted. Hell it was a miracle I got an N64 before my father died.

I never had a playstation because I couldn't afford it, so I had to make due with what I had.

The single player was a bit rough at times, but the multiplayer was such fun
