It only really becomes nonlinear at the endgame where there are a number of different quests you can chase, some of which are character-specific. Only notable source of divergence besides character selection is that there's a sewer area you can optionally go through to see a scene at the island the first time you go to the future, but there's no real gain in doing so and you go there later anyway.

I finished Chrono Trigger for the first time last month after skipping it for 34 years. It was alright, the combat starts fun but gets tiresome when you have too many moves and have to wander through the menu constantly to find what you want to use. Also it was absurdly easy, which I suppose is why it was so popular just like Mario RPG. Kids are notoriously bad at rpgs after all. Well now at least I never have to play it again

Chrono Trigger has to be the most overrated game on the planet. that isn't to say it's bad, there's just absolutely NOTHING special about it. it's just a well-executed jrpg with standard heroes, standard system, and standard everything for its time.

dont get me wrong here, but i see NO reason why this game deserves place next to SMB3/SMW, or OoT, or Goldeneye, or Street Fighter II. all of these games were special and made huge breakthroughs at the time, and still hold up really well despite their ages. I've tried to play it multiple times and I get bored pretty early into the game. I know for some reason people think you're not allowed to dislike this game, but it's not what I want in an RPG. It is far too easy. It is easier than FF6, which is really saying something. It has zero exploration to the game. It is probably the most linear RPG of all time. The sections don't feel more than like 5-10 screens large. The plot is also incredibly disjointed. It throws you to vastly different settings with nothing tying one section to the next. This game really doesn't hold up to how amazing people claim it is. There are about a dozen other RPGs that people never talk about that are better than this. Take Star Ocean: The Second Story. I never see anyone talk about that game here. It's got way more endings, better character development, cooler worlds, better music, better time travel, better battle system, fun side-quests, but nobody EVER talks about it. Totally forgotten by most people, but Chrono Trigger is constantly called the best RPG of all time.

Exposure, timing and platform are all factors. Chrono Trigger was top of its class on SNES, Star Ocean 2 was a sprite-based game that came out after FF7.

Well the map exploration isn't that linear either. It's not FF10 where there's literally no point to go back to previous locations (or a practical way to do so) until the very tail end of the game. Meanwhile CT gives you the End of Time not even 2 hours in, which serves as a hub world connecting you to at least 3 different time gates and Lavos (and eventually the Epoch) for the rest of the game.
