I dont think theres a single level across the ultimate doom 1 and 2 on which the par time exceeds 10 minutes, yet these giant maps with a thousand monsters at once seem to have become standard

I got Speedmapping pack 155 - Unthemed from '09 (https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/sm155_pack.html).). 4 maps, I've played the first 2 so far. The first (sm155_ankh.bsp) was a ho-hum green fortress that was over before it really began and had an annoying teleporter that puts you facing the edge of a ledge. Decent overall. The second (sm155_negke.bsp) was an interesting Doom themed map with two incredibly evil Spawn and just a shotgun to deal with them. Both maps had a Vore at the exit, its this the Quake equivalent of putting an archvile at the exit?

The other two maps. sm155_trinca.bsp is a small challenge, the first part seems unlikely without the secret Quad and it could have given me some health for the second, basically a large room filled with death knights and one shambler that spill out of it. Short and sweet with a neat setting. sm155_zwiffle.bsp was a blocky, more conventional map that likes teleporting in its death merchants Serious Sam style. One annoying platforming bit at the end followed by another horde at the exit, this time ogres and wizards. I guess putting a big horde of monsters right at the exit is another mapping trope. Overall these levels probably deserve their 3/5 rating but I might give a 2.5/5 for their brevity and simplicity.

After The Fall from '97 (https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/atf.html).). Now this is more like what I'm looking for. A total conversion with new textures, weapons, and enemies. Only played the first level but there are lots of cool features like Duke3d style cameras you can look through, non-hostile NPCs, and a train you board at the end of the map. Not familiar enough with Quake maps to know how impressive these things would have been for the time. The chaingun replacement is like Quake 2's on steroids, it's ridiculously fast. One thing to note is that I kept getting stuck on map geometry, those waterfalls on the top are actually solid brushes that I got stuck to. Might play some more but won't post any more screens, also I'll stop rating the maps I play since I don't feel qualified.

For Blood Anon: Rodent Rebellion didn't have any bugs that I found asides from the giant spider at the end. Felt like needing to look under the desk for the dagger key was a little to cryptic and halted progress for a bit, maybe put a limited invis in there as a secret and make the butcher drop the key. The final snowy area could've used more baddies to kill for how much ammo it dumps right before it (especially since the warehouse fight is harder, great job on that section btw) but again I was on lightly broiled. I mentioned the Freedoom Mancubus last night, and I'm damn glad with how far the iwad has come graphically, level-wise and soundwise but the one thing I wish they kept was the old soldier/shotgunner without armor, the naked doll of flesh that looked like something out of the deteriorating scene of Evil Dead. Yes, everything is original or redrawn per Carmack's 2001 email reply to the Freedoom devs:
>You can't re-create anything that is clearly our work.

>You can make a completely different game using the code with our blessing,
but if it has imps, cyber demons, BFGs, etc, then you are treading on thin ice.

>I hate to be the one to tell people this, but the reality of the business is that we are obligated to defend our trademarks and copyrights, so we can't just let things like that happen, even if they aren't perceived as a "threat".

>You could make and release a new DOOM wad that replaced everything with similary looking original art, but it would still be bound by the restrictions we place on community derivative work, so it wouldn't be "free" in the sense that the GPL'd codebase is.

I wonder if it could be used to make smoother Doom animations. The low resolution of Doom's sprites and lack of frames might make getting a good result difficult, but you could probably augment the quality by using the Smooth Doom sprites. Just imagine 35fps doom animations.

Speedmapping pack 109 from '05 (https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/sm109.html)) Here are my thoughts on the maps I played (screenshots are left to right, top to bottom):
- sm107_generic: incredibly mean and claustrophic gauntlet with a very tight shambler encounter and another mean vore exit.
- sm109_drew: a neat Egyptian theme, and this map makes better use of its tight space due to the verticality.
- sm109_generic: suspended rocks in some kind of void. Basically waves of monsters but there were many opportunities to lure fiends off of ledges which was fun and a neat idea.
- sm109_ht: surprise Chthon after the first fight, not sure if you can kill him. The second fight is a big slaughter arena that seems like a crapshoot at first, but taking it slow and planning carefully made it possible. Best one in the set.
- sm109_trinca: two boxes with monsters in them. Fun as a guilty pleasure, I guess Trinca improved a lot in the other map I played by him. Not really anything worth sharing, but I guess with how many of these speedmapping packs exist there are bound to be duds.
- sm109_zwiffle: a level inside a big monster, basically a hallway with dudes coming at you one by one. One part drops you in an arena with no cover and a shambler and instructs you to "do the shambler shuffle".
Overall not as good as the other speedmapping set, some of these maps are pretty half-baked. Honestly encourages me to make my own maps in Trenchbroom since I could have made some of these. Some neat ideas though, would have been nice to see more conventional maps with more exploration.

Do you or anyone else know what the end game of this is? Is this some sort of strategy to have Freedom as a base, GZDoom as the engine and HDest as gameplay? Together to become a standalone or commercial game? Idk anything about the licensing and what not.

The mod has been developed for a long time so I definately think the hard work should be rewarded, it's just, strange. Why? Why not Gold source or Unreal?

I know some modders sperged the fuck out and purposely made their shit not work with the Unity ports because they didn't like Bethesda or because the ports were broken at the beginning.

In my opinion Bethesda/iD have made good on the ports in that they have addressed and fixed problems, removed shit like that gay requirement to be online, and their curated add-on wads are really a boon to the community as a whole, it's exposing a huge demographic of people (namely consolefags) to mods they would never have played otherwise, it's getting still active modders like Revae more exposure for themselves and their wads and ultimately it will bring in new blood to the mapping scene.

There is no fucking way on this earth that GZDoom should need to be 64bit. What people want is more modding features and better vanilla support, not GRAFIX GWOAH DUDE and bullshit that fucks the performance all to hell.

Both NBlood and GDX are based on EDuke32.
BloodGDX was the first actual sourceport for Blood. It was made with Java and used jfDuke3D's version of Polymost renderer initially - both of those facts caused quite some drama among EDuke32 devs. Now it is developed into BuildGDX and aims to be a universal source port for Build games. Initially it was based on leaked alpha code - i don't know about current state of affairs but IIRC author mentioned the plans to remove the traces of it and build its own renderer. Initially was closed source too, didn't follow on that either.
NBlood uses the EDuke32 code. It is native, as opposed to BloodGDX's usage of Java environment, and has its own map editor in development. The guy behind it also made ports for Redneck Rampage, Duke 64 and PC Exhumed (RR and Exhumed are also supported in BuildGDX). NBlood is open source and is included in Raze which is a project to make a GZDoom of Build ports (using the GZDoom code itself too).
Fresh Supply is based on Kaiser's KEX engine and is the only port so far not developed by russians. Closed source and so far not multiplatform. KEX engine itself is derived from the one Kaiser used in Doom 64 EX, it is also used in the remasters of Turok, Forsaken, System Shock, Powerslave EX (PS1 version port canned by the devs to make a commercial one) and Strife.

Actually, it seems the vertical waving is only really intense against targets and surfaces right next to you, which makes sense and I'm a retard for not understanding that right away.

I actually really like it, it kind of takes the dot away from the focus of my vision when it's not important (it was never really distracting, like some people seem to find it, but it makes it even more subtle now), however when ever there's a time to take a precise shot, perhaps at distance, it's very nice to have it there and give me the precise point of impact (whether or not the weapon in question can hit that or not).
I think that even if you played without fancy gameplay mods and without freelook even, this would be nice to have. If you're really attentive, this could probably be used to spot Spectres moving towards you in the dark, but I've yet to find an occasion where this has actually made any real difference. Now that I think about it, you could use this to detect ZDoom +STEALTH monsters, which is actually great because those almost always suck and I hate them.

Here are some hard and fast faggot gun and monster mods for the PWAD:

https://litter.catbox.moe/qnuwvm.zip

Nothing set in stone, just throwing out ideas. I know someone made some dehacked weapons for 2048 and I actually copied some of their ideas like the smoke trails so maybe they can do one. I don't remember why I didn't use the 2048 pistol in this wad instead of the Eviternity one. Maybe Eviternity was faster

Guns:
-Pistol sprites/sounds/behavior from Eviternity
-Shotgun sprites/sounds/behavior from Antaresian Reliquary (desu I think the shotgun is TOO fast as it can nearly replace the SSG, I think maybe ONE or TWO frames slower would be a good start for a nerf)
-SSG behavior is vanilla / sprites from Vanilla Smooth Weapons / sound from PerK's Hi-Res SFX mod
-Super Chaingun sprites/sounds/behavior from Valiant
-Rocket launcher rate-of-fire is vanilla / sprites/sounds from Rowdy Rudy 2
-Rockets fly faster, idea from Antaresian Reliquary
-Rockets emit smoke, idea from 2048
-Plasma sprites are vanilla / sound from 2048 / behavior from Anta_Req (fires 1/2 as fast, but base damage increased from 5 to 12)
-BFG behavior is vanilla / sprites from Doom -1 (dw community project) / sounds from D4V

>> No.7372540

Monsters:
Changing monsters and keeping things balanced is difficult. In the spirit of hard and fast, I copied a lot of Valiant's ideas, like super imp and pyroknight and arachnorb.

One idea I like is using Turbo Pinkies, but their stun duration is left normal, not fast, and their pain chance is increased from 70 to 80%, to match that of imps, so that they can be chainsawed in spite of their fast bite.

One idea I feel strongly about is that spectres are bullshit, so they could be replaced by a stronger pinky variant, in this case, one that behaves identically to the fast monsters pinky. Do not chainsaw!

If you can punch out fast pinkies with berserk you will be fine, but most players will probably get their shit pushed in, so maybe the normal pinkies should behave normally, and the spectres will be fast but stunnable?

Included in the wad:
-Zombiemen - now have a refire check so they keep shooting - rate of fire is vanilla pistol.
I would like them to fire faster but I'll leave it as-is for now. With extended dehacked one can easily make him burst fire and keep walking instead of refiring
-Shotgunners - now have a refire check - rate of fire is pretty slow.
-Demons/Spectres see above
-Arachnotrons now have 50/50 chance to spawn arachnorb on death. Unlike Valiant, arachnorb doesn't affect kill%.
-Cacodemon - This change I will undo, and instead just add another monster. I doubled its movespeed and gave it a 50/50 chance to charge upon attack.
-Mancubus - now have a refire check
-Spiderdemon - now a cyberdemon with 1000hp.
-Baron of Hell - Eviternity cybruiser. Miniboss tier enemy. Cannot be resurrected, and isn't immune to rockets.
-Hell Knight - replaced with Valiant pyroknight
-Lost soul - health reduced to 45
Revenant/archvile/cyberdemon unchanged.

forgot to mention, to differentiate between pinky and spectre, the spectres have metal legs and horns

Future ideas:
Virtually limitless numbers of monsters can be added thru extended dehacked. Only limit for me is the number of in-game sounds, as I dunno how to access the extra sound slots yet.
I was gonna undo the cacodemon change, and make a new monster instead, but I'll leave it as-is so people can mess with it

Also something more creative should be done with the spectre slot I think, something besides invisibility

When I work, I usually worry about textures at the absolute end of my map. The idea is that if the level geometry looks good plastered in just one or two textures, I'm going in the right direction aesthetically. Sort of like how a monster or video game character should be good and recognizable by the silhouette alone, without the fine details, in other words..

Yes. In addition, it will feature Pop music with amazing midi renditions of talented artists like Ariana Grande. We'll be choosing her in honor of Black History Month. Sure, she only pretends black, but no one calls her out for it, so it's good enough. We'll also include Eminem. Again, not black, but he did shoot a music video against Trump in a parking garage with 10 or so of his black friends in the background, so that's pretty cool.

Eureka has a software renderer, so making GZDoom maps in Eureka will be much more cumbersome, since you can't preview GZ features in it. Slade also doesn't preview certain GZ features, but it does have an openGL renderer. ANYTHING you can make in DB you can make in Slade. It's just that Slade has a more limited set of tools, which makes it a bit less convenient, which leads to it being slightly more time consuming. The advantage that Eureka and Slade have is that they run natively on Linux. I use Slade primarily, but I have some limited use for Eureka. If you're on Windows, there's really not a reason to not use DB (Use GZDoom Builder, though).

Somewhat unrelated I think, but I've dabbled in custom map making for stuff like Doom before, not enough to be an expert or to label myself as a modder or mapper at all, and whenever I played it I always had this weird feeling that I'm just going through different rooms and killing bad guys but not "playing" the level proper, if that makes sense. I dunno what it is, and it may have been because it was a long time since I tried mapping and what little skill I had for it at the time, but playing my own levels in anything doesn't feel like I'm playing the game, but rather going through the motions of just going to wherever a bad guy is and killing them. Kinda like in Gmod, where you set up a bunch of zombie npcs in a row and kill them. Obviously mapping is more complex than that, but I get a similar feeling when playing a map I made.

I have no idea if I'm making sense with what I'm saying, but playing a map I made just feels different than playing another guy's, official or not. Not that I stopped looking into it because of that (I just lost interest somehow), but I guess the best way of saying it is I didn't feel challenged I guess by my own maps, regardless of monster placement, items, geometry, etc.

If you're talking about something else like a background or something when you play Doom RPG on PC, I don't know. I use J2ME Loader on my android phone and it works great, uses an onscreen numberpad to emulate the cell phones it ran on. I have never tried them on PC but I hear they run horrible, I think using a smartphone like this to play them is the best method.

I know you mentioned Doom 2 mega wads but just gonna double check that you’ve played some ultimate doom wads because they tend to be more chill and lean more towards interesting level design, as few of them as there may be.

This really isn’t the case. I recently switched to playing pwads on HMP for the same reasons you did, it really doesn’t feel like you’re playing empty maps. Often times mappers switch to less pressure-inducing monsters and add some more generous health packs etc. Just take a load off, swallow your pride, and lower the difficulty.

Are you the linux anon that posted about Slade and Eureka earlier? Go into sectors mode and delete the undesired sector. This is the fastest way to resolve that issue. Alternatively, drawing your shape clockwise will cause the linedefs to point inward, and drawing it counterclockwise will cause them to point outward. This is most easily observed when drawing a sector within a sector. Sometimes these outward pointing linedefs can sometimes create undesired sectors in negative space.

It ruins itself with randomly generated areas and stupid loot. Most of the loot is stupid bullshit designed to waste your time. +1% damage +2% ammo capacity, its like saying for every 100 bullets you fire you get one free. Some enemies are complete bullshit too, they have massive take damage auras or projectiles that can travel through walls. The funny thing is there were moments were I felt like it was almost good but the entire experience was too sloppy.

Also shitloads of blatantly reskinned enemies and they fucked up the story from the previous game. Hoji's girl is now an evil hoe

Start it and point it to your install directory, click the little setting gear icon to tweak your resolution and make sure to change midi from "none" to one of the options (I just use the first one Gervil) because it was default on none for me and results in no music.

For what its worth, I consider GDX's difficulty slider options to be a neat QOL feature. It's nice seeing what mobs they placed on the extra crispy difficulty without giving the cultists perfect accuracy and jacked up health.
>>7374434
I'd consider that more if I didn't see so many maps actually put effort into changing the mob compositions based on difficulty selection.
For me, UV is always something I expect to be rude or difficult for an unfamiliar set of levels without having tried them on a previous difficulty. If I end up swallowing my pride and finishing it on a lower difficulty it's a good excuse to replay it later on UV, and it's fun when an encounter you're somewhat familiar with is drastically more challenging based on what spawns on UV.

Lower skill levels will always feel like trimmed down experiences, even if they were designed for them instead of UV, if you focus on things like monster count too much.
You need to try and look at skill levels in pwads with a different mindset. Most modern megawads I've played tend to have HMP balanced as a slightly more forgiving UV, so theres still a decent challenge to be had.
Theres also wads like Bloodstain where I've actually seen numerous veterans on Doomworld (including Ribbiks) claim that HMP was a more fun experience than UV, because UV in the later levels essentially was floodfilling monsters to a point of making combat feel like pulling teeth, rather than providing a greater challenge.

I think it would benefit some megawads to keep the monster count consistent between UV and HMP, but just give HMP more resources. That way someone can play on a lower difficulty and not feel like they're missing out on certain encounters.
