There's been this terrible meme going around lately on gaming boards and sites where all of a sudden a surge of people are going out and claiming "muh first entry was the best entry", after YEARS of people considering the sequels far superior.

Look, I get it. In a sense, those first games were considered good enough and they set the foundation. But... BETTER than what came after? People are seriously starting to stay stupid shit like Sonic 1 > Sonic 2 or Mega Man 1 > Mega Man 2. Everyone for the longest time was in agreement that the future sequels utterly BTFO the originals and from then on they were only looked at in reverence for historical purposes. Is this a new form of contrarianism? Dude, NO ONE gives a shit that you think the 1st one was the best one. Literally no one. It doesnt make you special and it doesnt make you interesting. Pikmin 1 the argument could definitely be made it's better than the second, the time limit adds a legitimate challenge and threat to the game and it has a dark atmosphere that permeates the whole experience and makes it tense. 2 has great mechanics but is way more relaxing.

To be fair the Master System version is better than Game Gear because of the larger screen area. But it's not better than the real Sonic 1. Maybe it's Europoor cope because they couldn't afford 16-bit consoles yet. I know they like the "Mega Drive", but maybe late 1991 was too early and nobody could afford one until 94 or 95.

The original Metal Slug 2 was plagued with a lot of slowdown. Metal Slug X does fix this. I guess SNK couldn't just release a "fixed" version of Metal Slug 2, so they made X as a remixed port.I like them both. I prefer MS2 more. MSX does mix things up, and was made harder to suck back more tokens.

As soon as enemies pile onto the screen in MSX, the game slows to a crawl. Metal Slug X still has slowdown. But alot less of it. Pretty sure the updated game engine went on to be used in MS3.

For series that have longevity I can understand how that can come across as reaching (especially when they span multiple generations of games). However, some series which are only 2-3 games long and came out during a short period sometimes nailed their premise on the first try and were left only with ways to remix an already perfect formula. Pikmin is a great example of this. It pretty much nailed everything that "Pikmin" as a concept set out to do within one game. If no other Pikmin came out after Pikmin, it would still be a perfect and self contained game and not something that leaves people feeling wanting. I think that's what some people are referring to in those cases.

No, Sonic 1 isn't a bad game, but games like S2 and S3K are just more focused on what people really expect out of Sonic. He isn't Mario but fast. imo gothic 1 and 2 both respectively did some things better than the other.
gothic 1 had a cooler story and setting as well as better dungeons and gothic 2 had better gameplay/balancing/mechanics as well as a way bigger world.
