I think Disney handles all of the promotional material, including the box art for all games based on their properties. the artists that did the Aladdin covers also did other video game box art for various other Disney licensed games as well. They worked with a few different artists on commission. Probably someone at Disney thought that the Capcom Aladdin game would have a sword too.

>> No.7462357

There's also a minor Mandela effect that could have even affected Disney. Aladdin has so many action sequences that it's easy to just assume he uses a sword. I think what tricks people is that Abu pulls one on the guards in the opening chase and that gets warped in people's brains as Aladdin having one.

It was just convenient simplification. Aladdin uses a sword in the final act of the movie, so Virgin picked up on that since it makes for a more straightforward core gameplay.

Both games have their strong points, but the SNES version makes for a better adaptation of the source materials in terms of gameplay at least. It would be THE best adaptation in general if it wasn't for Capcom's penchant for "original" filler content in all their Disney games. The pyramid level is totally out of place for example.

As far as accuracy goes, the 8-Bit Sega version is the closest:

https://youtu.be/xH1gHd_Nniw?t=64

It was released on the GameGear and Sega Master System, and developed by a Japanese studio SIMS. Not sure if I would call it a better game.

I replayed the Genesis version recently and the sword attack feels awful. People often cite the sword as the reason why the Genesis game is superior, but its implementation is really shitty. The level design in the SNES game is way better too, for some reason no western developers other than Rare could design a level that flows well even if their lives depended on it.
Also, I played both versions as a kid and the games were kind of jumbled together in my mind, I remember a lot of stuff from the Genesis version happening in the SNES one and vice versa. It is weird how memory works.

The attack animation is very unsatisfying because of how quick the slashing motion is, the hit detection feels kinda off in relation to the animation and most important, there is no feedback on hit. It fucks up all the basic things in video game animation.

People often point out that the animation in the Genesis game is better, but I always found it to be kinda stiff. The attack animation is like three frames with just one being the actual attack, it has no knockback (neither you are knocked back by attacks), if you change directions after you begin an attack it is instantly cancelled instead of following your motion (and sometimes the attack sound still plays regardless), there is no actual death animation (transitioning to a black screen feels off to me), all the jump animations feel "under animated" there is like no inbetweens, if you run off a ledge the running animation keeps playing etc. The SNES game has simpler sprites, but every action feels more satisfying in it.

This is the worst cope I've ever seen. The SNES version's animation is actually stiff and you're complaining about the version that had actual Disney animators working on it? Fix yourself.
You can prefer the feel of the SNES game but its animation quality is objectively inferior.

Neither do they kiss on the Sega Master System either.

Actually, the SNES version is slightly censored, for a very minor detail.

When Jaffar makes his third wish, he calls the genie "Slave!" in the Sega Master System version (as in the movie script), but in the SNES version of the cutscene which is otherwise lifted verbatim from the movie it's "Genie!" instead.

That sort of thing was included in NoA's censorship guidelines and happened indeed with cases like Illusion of Gaia. Disney was obviously fine with it for the Sega version, so it's on Nintendo.

I checked and it happens in the Japanese SFC version too (localized post-censorship?), so make of that what you will.

On the other hand, the Sega Master System had a cutscene edited out, where the genie tells the three rules of wishes (not wishing for murder, forcing someone to love you, no bringing someone back from the dead) but it might be because of all of the unique sprites. It's still accurate to the movie.

>> No.7466287

I can see why both devs are wistful. All versions have wasted potential.

SNES version
>no sword
>massively inferior animation engine
>no prince ali segments or good cutscenes (like on SMS)
>no genie on packaging

Sega version
>tons of cut enemies and level segments
>including a third boss fight with Jaffar (genie form)
>third aghrabah level with prince ali sprites cut
>ended up like a barebones platformer (none of the adaptative level design that simplifies levels if you fail enough times)

Poor Master System version developers. No one asked them for their opinion.
