Kojima is the Oshii of vidya.
Hack meme director with brainlet political commentary.

anybody who ranks MGS1 above mid tier never took off their rose tinted glasses. entirely carried by the story when the gameplay is so simple and uninteresting.

When it first came out the gameplay was excellent. There wasn't anything like it and therefore nothing to compare it to. Now you have the sequels that improved on that gameplay to compare it to. Which I think is unfair to do

>MG2
honestly playing MG2 completely ruins MGS.
like everything you think is ultra meta and groundbreaking in MGS is actually just a direct copy from MG2.
So what's left from MGS is the horribly dated cinematics and voice acting, which doesn't hold up.
Play MG2 asap. It's probably the greatest 8bit game ever made. And the sounddrack is basically John Carpenter's "Metal Gear"

It's been a while since I played the first three but I'm going to say 3 > 1 = 2. They're all great games though.

Is 5 any good? Been itching for some MGS

>> No.7720312

>>7720301
5's controls are incredibly fun to play, but the level design is too open and rarely makes use of it. It has the usual issues of 100s of tool for 1 solution amplified by a millions. It basically makes 5 great to fuck around in, but has little structured challenge. Also if 1-3 are 50% story 50% game, 5 is 90% game 10% story. Take that for what you will.

3 > 1 > 2 > PW HD > 5 > 4 > MG2 > MG1

there was just something extraordinarily satisfying about finishing the short missions in PW, unlocking weapons, making upgrades, etc. I was hoping 5 will recreate it for better hardware and on a larger scale but it just wasn't as good, maybe the open world ruined it idk

>> No.7720364

As everyone else said, 5 is great. The "cinematics" really make it fun. For example, in the PC version (not sure about consoles) you can add your own custom soundtrack, and thus you can feel like a complete badass having copter fly into a hotspot to drop you off while blaring some 'Fortunate Sun'.

The original Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 is my favorite game in the series. I don't think it was ever topped by 2 or 3. At least not in the narrative department. I also liked Blastine's English translation, and I felt that it helped elevate the game. I like MGS3 more than MGS2. Using Raiden instead of Snake, killed it a bit for me. I like MGS2. though.

For me, it's
Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)
Metal gear Solid 2 (PS2)

Not including MGS 4 and 5 because they are not retro.

3> 2> 1.

The backtracking kills MGS1. MGS3:Subsistence is the best experience. The menus get annoying if you're a person who needs best camo all the time or has to heal a lot. Otherwise, it's perfect.

>Sons of Liberty
Postmodern masterpiece with incredible attention to detail in environments, AI, and gameplay mechanics, and a subversive, thought-provoking story that was years ahead of its time. Blew my fucking mind when I first played it in 2001 and made me reconsider what was possible with video games in general. Still my all-time favorite game today.
>Snake Eater
Great story, great characters, best boss fights in the series, and great gameplay that expands on MGS2's foundation, even if there's a lot of menu-fiddling throughout.
>Metal Gear Solid
Still a masterpiece, even if the pacing in the second half is weirdly-scripted and lopsided compared to the first half, with very few traditional stealth encounters after beating Sniper Wolf.
>Peace Walker
Great fun for a handheld game, doesn't just feel like a crappy spinoff though the story and tone are weirdly cheesy and lighthearted considering its place in the timeline.
>Ground Zeroes/The Phantom Pain
Awesome gameplay that expands on Peace Walker's mechanics and gives a fun sandbox of creative opportunities for either stealth or combat, but it's let down a bit by having too much open world fluff, an inconsistent tone, and a disappointingly-anticlimactic story that basically finds a way to get out of having to depict Big Boss's downfall, which would have been much more compelling
>Guns of the Patriots
Great gameplay where it counts, but the AI is a downgrade from MGS2 and 3 and has a similar pacing problem to MGS1- but much, much more severe- with only the first two acts offering traditional stealth gameplay while act 3 is a prolonged tailing sequence straight out of AssCreed followed by an on-rails shooting gallery, act 4 is (admittedly good) nostalgia-pandering fanservice with gay robots instead of guards, and act 5 is basically just a barrage of cutscenes
> Portable Ops
Mediocre filler spin-off with awful controls, deserves credit for establishing Peace Walker's template though

The 2D MSX games and Ghost Babel are fine, and Revengeance is great, but I feel like it's unfair to compare them to the other mainline games.

Metal Gear on NES is shit, Snake's Revenge is slightly better but still shit and not a real stealth game.

The only MG games I ever liked was solid 5 and the top down ones. I'm sure someone will say some shit about the story even though it's a video game and back tracking every 20 minutes and seeing 4 cut scenes in that time isn't good game design. Yeah, it was ground breaking when it came out, but so was Half Life and that was fucking boring as well.

I liked the stories of MGS and MGS3 the best. I'm torn between a US government funded bipedal tank that bypasses international nuclear missle laws due to a loophole, or woman so loyal to her country that she goes deep cover to the point that shes willing to be forever labeled as a treasonous defector for the betterment of said country.

I've played through MGS2 4 times, love it.
I got to the part in MGS3 where Snake and Woman are on the motorcycle and sidecar and fighting against Russian Man in Big Tank and decided that was enough for me.

>> No.7723539

MGS4 is better than 5.
MGS4 has great controls and acts 1, 2 and 4 are fun. The story is shit.
MGS5 has great controls. The maps are boring, the missions are boring, if you want to R'n'D, then be ready to fulton everyone, which is not fun, and wait a bunch, which is not fun. It does have a few great cutscenes, but it has no story.
MGS5 is shit.

MGS was pretty groundbreaking at the time. MGS2 was some navel-gazing intellectualism packaged as a "fuck-you" letter to the fans that made Kojima a big name. Stopped playing after that but I heard 3 was good. Watched my friend "play" (ie watch cutscene) an hour of 4 and it was the gayest fucking thing I ever seen outside of Final Famtasy.
