The ones that blow my mind are games I saw for under $20 just 2 years ago that go for over a hundred now.

Like legend of legaia. I grabbed that sucker for around $15 in 2018, and its currently listed on ebay at the lowest as $90 for disc only. I was seeing cib for around $140.

I have some inkling how and why this happens, but the games it happens with is mind boggling to me sometimes.

Even hugely popular games like FFVII have barely seen a price creep up in over a decade, even with greedy mom and pop stores over charging for them, but the legend of fucking legaia (a game barely anyone ever knew about) has a massive spike in just a few years. Wat?

And every seller on eBay wants to see if they can get just a little bit more than the last guy selling the same game.

It used to be that there were 1 or 2 games that were going to be landmark purchases at some point but now Panzer Dragoon Saga, Snatcher, Crusader of Centy are all crossing the multi-thousand mark that I just don't know that I can ever justify. Realistically, my collection is already pretty good so I don't feel too bad about it, but I really don't know how anyone could get into collecting now without having a really good salary and nothing better to spend it on.

I don't known if you're being serious, but an economic advice: don't bet your future in any collection. As an hobby, it will only be bought by people with your same tastes and with cash to spare. Even that way, there's a chance they already started their collection, so they will just want to buy a few items from you. In the end, you might havenmany valuables in your possession, but can't sell them fast enough (or even sell, no matter the time) to turn them into money. If you get desperate, clever buyers will noticed and make offers way below what you wanted.

So, provide your retirement in a safer way, then you can sell your collection at ease of mind.

Not him but, my pre-covid my collection was worth a little over $1k and just now crossed $6k from appreciation alone. Granted I was smart enough to snag CIB stuff which holds value better due to rarity.

The S&P 500 couldn't even touch those gains in its best years and when the market crashed in May 2020, the /vr/ collections value were unharmed.

I'm not saying to invest in old games for retirement, I'm just saying there are far worse things you could invest in based on the data/charts.
