recently I realized that Battle City was never released in the West. have you guys never played it? due to piracy, this was probably the most famous game on Dendy (famiclone) in Russia.

>> No.7757203

Fuck yeah I've played that game.
It was one of the better games in those old 100-games-in-1.

There was supposedly a version of this game called Tank 90 sold here in Poland for the Pegasus famiclone. Did you guys get that too? Is it any different from the Namco original apart from the title screen?

I think it was a slightly hacked version with better upgrade drop rates.

The differences between the original BC and Tank90 are this mostly:
>New original levels (in most versions) that go up to stage 99 before looping;
>New powerups - a gun icon for instant maximum rank upgrade, and the boat for a rafting kit allowing you to cross water tiles (also counts as an extra hit) indicated by red contour around your tank's hitbox;
>The enemies can steal dropped powerups from you in some game versions - it can be a real bummer if they nick a Shovel or the Clock right from your hands (Grenade is nasty too if youre out of extra lives);
>Overall more enemies at a time onscreen - 3 vs 5 IIRC, some even have random shielding levels (applies to the Tigers as well who can now spawn without any extra armour) and if they also happen to bear a bonus, the ammount of extra hits corresponds to how many power-ups they can drop (only one bonus onscreen allowed though);
>A new enemy tank type who can remove steel blocks like Player at max rank can (its actually a Player tank sprite with maxed rank just grayed out);
>At least one version of tank90 removed friendly fire protection in co-op (I swear that I've owned it once)

I lol'd when there was a level on Bangai-O Spirits called combat city and it's a remake of the first map.

I absolutely adored this thing, one of my favorite games on my PolyStation by far, it was built into the system, alongside other 999.999 games or something.

That's one of the most played retro games in Poland? I constantly find new people that played it in the past, sometimes it's the only game they ever played, both kids and parents/adults of very various ages.

It was a very good game for coop. Enemy tanks were named after German WW2 tanks. The ones on the pic were called after self-propelled atillery, bigger ones were called Tigers. Also that opening music.

I am from the US and I only discovered this game via NESticle, probably during the N64 era. I liked it. I would have liked it more as a kid. Too bad!

I played it when I imported my Family Computer Disk System. It wasn't officially released for Disk System, right? Pretty sure I had pirated cartridge games in my lot. They used white Disk Cards instead of the usual Nintendo-branded yellow.

Sometimes you could find pirate Taiwanese carts at the mall that would have Battle City, so it wasn't a complete unknown to Americans pre-emulation.

>> No.7760917

Never played it growing up, but I quickly discovered it once emulators became a thing. There were no places anywhere near me that carried bootlegs or imports until the mid-90s.

to be real here, Dendy was in the 90s, when USSR already fell. and many other countries had NES knockoffs, eg Pegasus. Russia in the 90s was pretty lawless, no one gave a fuck about copyrights / intellectual property, so naturally Dendy flourished in that environment. most people didnt even realize it was all piracy.

in a way it's a symbol of national power, tankies are called so for a reason—whenever there was trouble, USSR sent in tanks. soviet media also created this image of tank drivers as heroes of movies/books etc, so in a way it was a dream for kids, kinda like being an astronaut but not quite as far-fetched.
but also military tech is a pretty common hobby everywhere, I guess in Russia it's just more pronounced with military being so imbued in soviet culture. and i'll give them that, tanks can look cool.
