I tested the cartridges with my other SNES and they're fine. I also didn't drop it or anything. Anyone know what causes this?

Some component dying is my guess. Try using the burn in rom on a flashcart if you can. It will tell what component is at fault.

My friend's SNES glitched out as well. I tested the game on my SNES and it worked fine. It seems like the internal memory has gone kaput or something. We never found out what happened, he just sold the SNES for parts for a low price.

If this is the case, I assume picking the console apart and cleaning it wouldn't help?

>> No.7757325

>>7757319
Nope, best case scenario one of the legs on the PPU went cold and needs to be reflowed. The problem is SNES PPUs and CPUs are just fucking dying. That green shit you're seeing is an artifact from one part of the PPU not doing its job or being unable to complete it. An element of one of the background layers isn't going through entirely, and it could be a number of things.

If you're handy with an iron and want to solder it, try reflowing it. Otherwise check for damaged traces and otherwise your SNES is just on its way out like many more before it.

Recap that poor thing. Its about time. Easy repair and will work properly once its done. A fucked SNES doesnt load games at all.

Recapping isn't going to help if he has one of the early production SNESes with the faulty CPUs in it.

>> No.7761495

A bad PPU will have more than graphical glitches. Its also much less likely than bad caps even if it is a early SNES. The console has barely 20 caps in it its a 10$ repair at most. Doesnt hurt to try and it will have to be done eventually.

>> No.7761518

>>7761495
To be honest he'll have to take it apart and find out if he has an early board anyway. The bad CPUs were in SHVC and some GPM units. Any SNES made in 1993 up should have the CPU-B which doesn't have reliability issues.

>> No.7761525

>>7761495
>Doesnt hurt to try and it will have to be done eventually
cap issues aren't really an issue with SNESes as Nintendo used Nichion caps which are good quality. Sega used lots of shitty caps especially in the Sega CD and Game Gear and those always need replacement.

>> No.7761545

>>7761525
All caps dry out its just a matter of time and these systems are 3 decades old.

>> No.7761547

>Nichicon
Nichicons may be good but caps are caps and they all are waaaaaaay beyond their rated lifetime. I have a shitton of bad nichicon caps in a bag somwhere from working on vintage audio. Most of them are usually fine and some and even still in spec but when a couple go bad the whole thing is fucked. You only need one to go bad for shit to hit the fan. Sometimes catastrophically.

>> No.7761554

>>7761547

you know, you might not want to store your shit in a damp basement or shed. that's usually what causes caps to deteriorate. granted, electrolytics also like being powered on once in a while to keep from drying out.

>> No.7761563

>>7761554
Rated life time is 20ys. Its simply the first thing to go bad. that whole "werks on my machine" or "dont live in florida lmao" schtick doesnt hold for shit. If the SNES glitches out in 80% of cases it a bad power rail because caps are borked. What you describe is reforming and while it can sometimes "ressurect" a leaky cap, Its not going to put the electrolyte back in the can. You dont know what you are talking about.

I have a SNES that works find and I don't worry too much about it because I don't have the safety screwdriver bit to take it apart. If it was just Philips head screws maybe I'd take it apart and have a look but I don't know how to solder so I couldn't recap stuff if I wanted to.

Electronics hate heat and moisture. Their life expectancy is reduced there. But if you have good AC and stored them properly they're likely "fine". The older stuff may use a service.

I store all of shit in cases in a water-resitant plastic container when not in use. I had a mold problem awhile back that made me ultra-paranoid about protecting my stuff. I figure that I'm probably screwed either way though. humidity is high but I can get it down to around 50-55 in the house.

>> No.7762909

It's the PPU or bad memory. Load a test ROM on your flash cart and run the burn in test. Replace whatever fails.

>> No.7762920

>>7762909
boot up FF6. the title screen uses Mode 7 so if the PPU is kill then it will glitch out. Mario Kart is another common test as it uses the multiplier/divider. sometimes a bad CPU or PPU will not be immediately obvious because not all games use all of their features.

I have an issue with my NES randomly shutting off and I suspect it's a dry solder joint in the power jack. this tends to be a problem with SNESes but I guess it can happen with a NES too; Nintendo probably used the same identical power jack in them.
