Why do people hate this game? It was the first time the N64 had an RPG in America (And it came out in 1998). The PS1 had all the RPGs, so to see the N64 finally get one 2 years into it's lifespan felt satisfying

Afterwards, it took us a year to get another one, Hybrid Heaven, mixing Action-Adventure with RPG, then we didn't get another one until another year later in 2000 with Ogre Battle 64, and then in America, we would get two more ones in 2001 with Paper Mario and Aidyn Chronicles and that was it

So why did people hate Quest 64 if it was the first RPG in America for the Nintendo 64?

>> No.8035326

it's a shitty game.

>> No.8035329

So you have to like a shit game because it was your only option? How about playing a good game instead of being a sycophant for your console.

>> No.8035347

The hate for it is so blown out of proportion. It's not objectively a bad game, it's just a bit underwhelming and generic storywise. Doesn't mean it can't be fun though, the battle system is definitely fun and so is exploring the world. I personally love generic as shit RPGs and would rather play something like this or final fantasy legend than some super high strung overly serious RPG that can't get a big enough wiff of its own facts, like Xenogears.

The PSX was constantly getting stuff like Breath of Fire, Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Xenogears, Wild Arms, etc. I think you can see why N64-only players were bitter. In retrospect, it's a short, mediocre baby's first RPG with an extremely basic story and a final boss you can assrape in under a minute.

Hybrid Heaven is an RPG?
I saw it more of a sort of turn based wrestling game

FPBP, never was so disappointed with a game in my life before playing this one. Praise for it only justifies how much I dislike the n64 and its fans

>> No.8035629

That's specifically why people hate it. It was hyped up as the N64's big RPG, and then it was just kind of okay. Plus, people wanted an FFVII, and this is more in the vain of a SNES style RPG.

Why did you treat "It's the only thing we had" like a point in favor of the game's quality? Genuine question because that's the huge disconnect between your opinion and everyone else's.

>> No.8035791

>>8035321
I am going to ignore if the game is good or not for a second.

Just to be clear. The 64 became a system to do particular things on. That player base that build up was decisive and not many people were buying a 64 that were going to play a game like Quest 64 or any long single player RPG. The player base was buying first party nintendo games and the occasional game that came from pc that would never have worked on ps1/saturn or unique games that again wouldn't work on the competition like Doom 64.

When your competition the ps1 is shitting out nothing but mediocre garbage daily by the truckload. Also cornering the rpg consumers and people that wanted lots of cd dialogue and fmvs, then developers put particular games on the 64 that would sell best there while putting the rest on ps1.

Growing up as that hipster from YIIK being fed a diet of SNES RPGs like Chrono, Illusion, FF, to this hunk of shit was painful in ways that can't be explained if you didn't grow up with these platforms.

Xenogears is a bad example. It's a spectacular train wreck due to well funded passion and over-ambition colliding with reality. It's inherently polarizing in a way that few other games will ever be.

Maybe, but my real point was just that I like simple RPGs. Final Fantasy Legend is one of my all time favorites, because it's just pure RPG mechanics with a pick up and play instantly feel to it. Quest reminds me of that kind of scope.

Of course the N64 deserved more than that. But just taking the game as it is, it's really perfectly average, it's an obvious "genre game" and whether you like that or not is just personal taste. It's not an outright shit game, and the hostility about it just seems a bit performative.

>> No.8036763

I liked it, I thought it was fun to move around and combine spells, the towns and lack of story were a huge downer though. Didn't the GBC port get good reviews? if it's the same game why the difference in opinions?

I can't imagine fans of all the great RPGs on the SNES who bought an N64 being anything but pissed to get this mediocre unfinished pile after two years while the PlayStation gets followups to all there favorite series.

Perhaps, that dosn't magicly make it a good game though. Its has its highlights but its still overall a meh game at best.
