Starting off with Shinobi III, the most dumbed-down entry in the series. Joe Musashi was given way too powerful of a moveset that the stages and enemies weren't balanced around accordingly (Castlevania IV shares this same problem), and thus the game is just too easy as a result. X, Revenge and the arcade games are all much better Shinobis than III.

>> No.8135765

Enemies in CV IV are most definitely based around the whip. They start coming at you in circular patterns in the later levels.

Depends on your taste in games. If you like a challenge revenge of shinobi is better than 3.

According to who? I've almost never heard this game mentioned outside of /vr/ (and I've been playing it almost yearly since 1995), and on /vr/, the average anon starts loudly dilating if this is even mentioned as a good game, ESPECIALLY in comparison to Revenge of Shinobi.

This game is superb, although i have never been able to complete it. I keep trying anyways. Shinobi X is fuckin fantastic, cant beat that either. All castlevania are way too hard, i have to save state every screen to make progress.

I can believe someone can like the other Shinobi's over 3 but X? That is pushing it. I don't even hate the game but it's outside of the God tier cheese live action cutscenes it's forgettable.

>> No.8137138

It’s unironically one of the best pure action games of all time thanks to a great ost, great visuals, level design that isn’t bullshit like revenge of shinobi, has good variety between the stages, and actually is a fair challenge. Revenge of Shinobi fails by having bad level design that forces you to make leaps of faith only to be knocked back by an enemy near the edge

>> No.8137457

Shinobi squabbling is about as gay as Castlevania squabbling, the series had a great run back in retro times

Aside from The Cyber Shinobi. Not sure what Sega was smoking when they shat that out.

Revenge of Shinobi is easy as piss once you memorise the enemy locations. Then it stops being about reactions and quick thinking and more about hitting enemies off screen before they can get a shot in. Shinobi III is basically the same thing but with less bullshit things to memorise and more enjoyable platforming thanks to the new level of control you have over Joe.

While it can delve into some lowdown shitposting nothing here holds a candle to the continuous non-stop castlevania threads we have on /vr. If I had to rank them in order it would go:
1. Castlevania threads
2. 16 bit console wars
3. N64 has no gaems
4. Trashure
5. Mario 3 vs SMW
6. Sonic threads
7. Beat em ups
8. Resident Evil Francise/Dino crisis
9. Crts
10. Shinobi franchise

Probably missing a few that would bump Shinobi down the list more but you get the point.

I know this has probably been posted a lot... but Earthbound.

I tried to play it, very seriously, three separate times. I never made it past 5 hours. I'm fine with retro JRPGs and have played through Shin Megami Tensei 1/2, Phantasy Star 1-4, all the retro Final Fantasy games, etc. But Earthbound is just... not fun.

It's too hard to be casual and relaxing (like Live-A-Live), but way too easy to pose a serious challenge (like Shin Megami Tensei or Wizardry). The plot doesn't seem to take itself seriously, and there's not enough motivation for you to move forward and care. The combat is boring and barebones. I even hate the graphics and battle music. Nothing about the game is fun to me, at all. I literally don't understand the appeal.

Bats are the most prominent (especially on second loop) but also jumping skeletons, dancing spectres, electroplasm, flying eyeballs, flying books, there's a lot of diagonal enemy attack patterns.

It's easily the longest Classicvania with the most filler levels, with only the last stage I'd consider anywhere close to being challenging (but then you have that letdown of a Dracula boss fight who doesn't even have a second/third form).

>> No.8141097

>>8141089
Disagree about filler levels, but about the 2nd form: it's because the IV team was the only cv team who was in contact with akamatsu's team, so they knew about Curse of Man lore and how cookie monster wasn't really a "form" for dracula (gaibon is kind of a homage to CoM)

You're not the only one, man. My brother used to be obsessed with it like 20 years ago, not because of reddit and sóy shit (which we had no idea even existed, way back then), but because Ness the Smash Bros character had psychic powers, and my bro was obsessed with psychic powers and the supernatural. It was reasonable fun on an emulator back then (not as much as Mario RPG, FF6, or X2), but years later when I tried it and got through it, it was mediocre as hell. Besides, Earth Bound for NES is much better.
