I want to use my ps2 as a dvd player so I can watch old anime on my crt, how do I get burned dvds to play? Are there any softmods I can use?

>> No.8173430

Alternatively could I somehow play video files from usb or hard drive instead?

The PS2 plays burned DVD videos right out of the box. No softmod required.

You will be wearing out your laser though.

I tried playing an old one earlier today but I got the red error message. Maybe it's the file format?
So I should probably pursue playing off external storage. What are my options?

You did uh burn it as a dvd video right. it's a specific format. it's not just an mp4 on a disc.
anyway you can use Simple Media System

>> No.8173451

You can try Simple Media System (SMS) for media playback. No idea if it's good or not, seems to be the only one around.

It's pretty bad. The problem is you have to use .avi format which nobody uses anymore and the file sizes aren't ideal as a result. Also if you're loading media from USB and you have like 100+ items in a folder expect it to take a long time to populate the list, if it even does. That's a pain in the ass. Requires a lot of conversion time if you plan on watching through something like anime series too. It was a novel media player in its day but these days you're better off not even bothering. If a media player specifically to use with a CRT is something you're interested in, I'd recommend nabbing a softmodded PS3 or Wii instead. The media players available for those are a lot more robust, particularly Movian on PS3, and you're going to have a much easier time with either of them.

Somewhat on topic, is it possible to listen to audio CD images on GDemu? I can't seem to find anything about this and it's something I've been very interested in since I got one

>> No.8173507

Just use a PS3 if you have one. It's what I do. My PC is near to it, so I can also transfer the files through ethernet and play them in Movian. I've tried usig Universal Media Player, but it has some problems.

>> No.8173527

Get an Xbox instead
DVD Video is an awful format for home recordable use since the amount of video per disc is tiny compared to more modern encoding formats like h264

I was curious enough to try and it turns out you can! Convert audio tracks to CCD/IMG/SUB using UltraISO, add them to your SD card the same way you would a Dreamcast game image, and you can listen to """"CDs"""" with GDemu. I'm honestly a little surprised that it worked. and glad. I missed that stupid CD player screen.
