Is it actually good or just another overrated cubie game?

>> No.8182360

its barely horror, its an action game with an amusing mechanic, though the sanity gimmicks only activate if you're sucking at the game.

>> No.8182369

I played it for the first time a few years ago and immensely regret not buying it on release. It's amazing and in my top 10.

There are probably 4 or 5 games worth buying for the Gamecube. This is one of them.

Fun hack & slash with neat gimmicks and a good story. Not really scary though the Roivas Mansion has a great atmosphere.

It's fucking piss easy. I didn't get a single sanity effect when I first played it, because once you figure out how to kill the enemies efficiently, there's basically no more challenge. It's braindead and definitely not spooky.

>> No.8183205

>>8183192
>It's braindead and definitely not spooky
Exactly how I feel about every horror game. Horror just doesn’t work in video game (or film), I can’t get immersed and fear requires some sort of danger or threat. You’re never in danger watching a film or playing a game, it’s impossible to be afraid. The closest they can come is shocking you through cheap jump scares.

>> No.8183254

>>8182356
it's fucking expensive

Sounds like a failure on your part to be immersed in the game.

>> No.8184351

>>8182356
Actually good, though the best sanity effects are experienced when intentionally keeping the sanity meter below half-full, and you should practice the controls early on against the weaker foes. It's surprisingly mobile instead of having tank controls, but it takes a while to get used to how it works.

>> No.8184386

>>8182356
It's great but not in a direct in your face scary way. At least not for me. It's the way the plots come together plus the little things like you rotting more and more in CHARLEMAGNE! level make it great.

>There are probably 4 or 5 games worth buying for the Gamecube
If we're talking about exclusives or games originally released on the Gamecube and in a superior form on it, it pretty much comes down to this:

>Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
>Killer7
>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
>The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
>Metroid Prime
>Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
>Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
>Pikmin
>Pikmin 2
>Resident Evil
>Resident Evil 4
>Resident Evil Zero
>Super Mario Sunshine
>Tales of Symphonia
>Viewtiful Joe
>Viewtiful Joe 2

So that's 16 games.

It is both actually good and slightly overrated, but most of all it's an interesting game that I think most people should play just to see the concepts it was trying to implement.

It's not the first time I've heard that someone's completely unable to feel fear unless it's danger to them personally. I wonder if it's an empathy blockage; there are types of people in the world who physically cannot by any means be made to imagine or care about people or perspectives other than their own. I'm not talking about normal people who are kinda self centered or whatever, I'm talking about the tiny percent for whom it's pathological as an actual mental illness and a legit barrier to their minds.

If someone's wired that way, I'm wondering if that's the type that actually don't get anything out of a horror game or movie featuring a character as the subject of it. Food for thought.

The narrative is really well done especially considering its scope. A nonlinear story taking place over millennia is hard to pull off, but the Tome of Eternal Darkness as a framing device & the recursive nature of the story just makes it work so well.

Is this game better played on a crt through rgb or on an hdtv via component?

>> No.8188103

>>8188080
Honestly depends on the TV. But you could ask the same for any Gamecube game. I'd say most are better on a Wii with component cables on an HDTV. (I have a very small one) I plan to play some Gamecube games on a CRT like Animal Crossing (since it was originally an N64 game) and Resident Evil 2 and 3. (likewise since they were originally Playstation games.)

The idea & story was great. The atmosphere is very good. The targeting system is aces, but combat overall is lacking. The sanity effects are a good gimmick, but completely obliterated by the magic system, especially when you learn the restore sanity spell. All you have to do to restore your mana is spin around in a tight circle and it replenishes, so you can completely restore your sanity with the weakest version of the spell, which is piss poor design. I really think there shouldn’t have been any magic in the game, and it would be much better.

let me make a list of amazing games on it, where each game becomes an additional x multiplier of how much better the gamecube is than the xbox since the xbox has almost zero good games
metroid prime
wind waker
super mario sunshine
starfox adventures
mario kart double dash
pikmin
f-zero gx
resident evil 1, 0

It's a good game, nothing amazing.
The end kinda drags on a bit with the tower section that you have to do twice for no reason.
I basically barely got to see the sanity effects because the game is really easy, basically I had to let myself get hit just to see them.
7/10, luigis mansion is better and REmake basically blows it the fuck out.

>The end kinda drags on a bit with the tower section that you have to do twice for no reason.
I mean in fairness, only 4 locations actually exist in the entire game
>Roivas Mansion
>Cambodian Temple
>Oublie Cathedral
>Underground Persian Temple
You just visit them in different time periods so different paths are opened up.

>> No.8188739

>>8188732
What was the reason for this?
It was probably the weakest part of the game, not the locations themselves, but the fact that you need to visit them so many times.

>> No.8188749

>>8188739
Because their stories interlinked
>Anthony was kept alive by the curse and is put down by Paul Luther, and the Guardian that kills him is destroyed by Peter
>Ellia is bound to Mantorok, who Lindsey finds and is able to give her peace when he takes the Heart of Mantorok from her
>Karim guards the Ancient's essence until he gives it to Roberto, and this sets up the enchanted gladius which Michael brings to the Roivas house
>Maximillien discovers the ancient city but is too frightened to go there but he writes about it, your grandfather reads the writings and does go there

>> No.8188754

>>8188749
I understand the reason storywise, but do you think they reused the locations and wrote the story around it or the other way round?
Either way, I feel like the game would have been much better without the reuse of locations, the gamecube could certainly handle having unique locations for each character, even if it meant being a two disc game.
Also the tower 'linking' section at the end was nothing but unneeded padding, which almost knocks it down a point by itself.

>> No.8188760
