I'm playing Rondo of Blood right now on the PSP and it's a fine game but I wish it was more like Super Castlevania 4 in that the whip actually went in multiple directions.

Then what's the point? I wouldn't consider Castlevania horror at all, it's more like parody with all the 1930s monsters thrown together in one castle like they're having some kind of crazy get together.

Finishing up on the Castlevania GBA trilogy for the first time. Already got done with CoTM and Aria of Sorrow, going through HoD and really enjoying trekking through the Skeleton Caves. Kinda disappointed the enemies are so slow and stupid, though this applies to pretty much all of the Castlevania Metroidvanias. Want to try out some fun/goofy spooky games like MediEvil and looking for suggestions.

>>8200832
RoB and other Classicvanias need you to figure each enemies attack pattern and stage layout, just take your time and come up with a strategy that works, then it's just keeping yourself consistent from there.

it's pretty good especially for a 3rd party GameCube exclusive. the level design is a little more linear than i remember, but the atmosphere is still great and the overall production is solid. combat is a little stiff but not difficult to get used to. it's also a lot easier than your average resident evil game. i definitely recommend checking it out.

It's not, particularly because you're a badass hero who can fight and defeat the monsters in combat, but it still has spooky trappings, leaning a lot on gothic horror concepts and visuals.
Kind of like how Doom, Splatterhouse, or Blood aren't horror games in any real sense, but they're steeped heavily in horror trappings, and occasionally get spooky.

I understand that it's a really troubled game, but which also has a few bright glimmers too, and I wanted to see it for myself. Since it has the original trilogy, that was decent incentive to get it at any rate.

Starting with Luigi's Mansion working my way up to more intense affair. That said, though not scary it is surprisingly atmospheric and unsettling at times for a Nintendo game aimed at kids. Beyond the seasonal playtrough of a Classicvania and some of the Splatterhouses, should I do Silent Hill 2 or Eternal Darkness?

So Castlevania 4 on the second loop isn't that much harder after just completing it. I'd still say it's the easiest Castlevania of its generation, with Bloodlines on Expert being the most challenging, though I haven't checked out X68000 / Chronicles' loop yet so maybe I should do that next to see how hard it gets.

The first one is so much better, but this one's got such an atmosphere that it's almost worth playing just because of that. Almost, because the combat's shit and it's super repetitive.

>> No.8211370

huh, looks like i'm not the only one out here playing bloodlines.

i rented the game probably once when it came out. haven't played it until last week. i've got it down until stage 3. i'm not quite sure how to kill the boss yet.

i haven't read the manual. i think i'm missing some details about pickups. sometimes i get a super whip and i'm not sure why. i also tried to loop in the first stage where you take the stairs down and kill mermen. i thought i might get 99 sub weapon points, but it's too tedious for me to mess with.

also, your score is LOWER if you use your subweapon?

And I completely agree with your sentiment on Medievil. I've been playing Hell Night. It's amazing what the developers have managed to create with such a low budget. Its minimalist approach works in its favor.

Anything I need to know about Maximo Ghosts to Glory? I played the first level and I can already see that it's hard as balls, collecting money will be a pain and that goddamn save system.

Only played a little bit of this. Is the intention for you to just murder every unarmed peasant you come across?

I finally beat CV1. It's been on my backlog for ages and I always try to kill the old vampire every October.

Like someone played it and thought "what if this whole game was just the Boeing people in the house?"

>They completely ripped off Angry Chair for the story screen music

>> No.8241210

>>8241115
That's because the story screen music is taken from Doom 2, which famously 'sampled' a lot of Alice In Chains, to name others. Not 1 to 1, but you can immediately tell what most tracks are based on when you hear them.
>Dirt
>Junkhead
>Rain When I Die
>Rooster
>Dam That River
>We Die Young
>Man In The Box
>God Smack
>Them Bones
>Angry Chair
These were all sampled, so most of the Dirt album, though they only ended up actually using the last two at all, the rest were only release as unused rough cuts many years after the games.

They also sampled a bunch of Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Sergeants Of Death, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, also some AC/DC, Soundgarden, Diamond Head, King Crimson, Stone Temple Pilots, Megadeth, and Body Count. Some very based music choices overall, and fits the games well, though as most of the music was 'samplings' like these, it's not the most original.
