All the online archives you see of GeoCities come from the same source: ArchiveTeam's crawl of the site shortly after Yahoo announced its shutdown.

They actually saved nearly all of the site... as it existed in 2009. The problem is, if a webpage was deleted before that point, they obviously weren't able to get it. Half of Area51 (sci-fi/fantasy) was preserved, but only about 20% of TimesSquare (vidya) and less than 1% of Broadway (theater) made it.

Personal websites were already dying due to social media. You can blame social media and smartphones for opening the floodgates for retards on the internet. Before that, you needed to be able to operate a computer and know how to use a mouse and keyboard. A low barrier to entry for sure, but still much higher than 90%+ people using the internet today could overcome. Smartphone apps are literally easy enough for a chimpanzee to use.

Before social media, people used the internet for talking about things, ideas, and shared interests. Then MySpace came along and taught everyone how to use the internet to feed their narcissism and publish content about themselves. Of course things got worse and worse with FB, IG, etc. Things generally got worse as more women got on the internet.

Honestly, if women and sexual deviants were banned from the internet, things would likely return to the way they were in the late 90's to early 00's. t's not like either aforementioned group has anything interesting or valuable to say.

A consequence of this is that it's surprisingly hard to find the PokeGod/"how to catch Mew" fake rumors from the height of Pokemon's popularity. To be preserved, the website owner would have had to abandon the site (but not take it down) in the 6 months or so people spread those rumors.

Also I would not blame social media for how things became worse in the beginning. It was more about communities, sharing interests the same things you described. Especially on hobby focused sites. But in the past decade more and more sites became coopted by Government contracts to have news feeds and even hobby focused sites sold their soul to push things not even related to the hobby at all. YouTube, Twitter never even had such things on their front page let alone the side page. It use to be for interaction and going to have fun with like-minded communities and make more friends than be introverted. Now it's just division, hatred, and telling people what to think and how to feel.

Right, "about me" stuff existed but it wasn't very relevant. It wasn't until the social media era where that kind of content became the main focus of the entire internet such that it shaped the culture of everything around it.

It's not entirely caused by females on the internet, but that is a large factor. Females not only shit up the space they are in with their own bullshit, but the mere presence of females makes men change up their own behavior such that they shit the place up, too. There is a reason why "men's only" spaces have been coveted throughout history, which is also why there has been a deliberate effort in modern times to destroy male spaces by pushing females into them as an offering to the false god of "inclusion." In short, men create a space that suits them, females are pushed into it, but since the space doesn't suit the females, and females are unable/unwilling to adapt to the space, the space is forced to adapt to the females, and everything the men built before that point is destroyed. This is a pattern you see over and over. This isn't a "let's hate women" diatribe as this process is always largely facilitated by men.

>> No.8382375

>>8381879

There have been a significant women on geocities since the beginning, though admittedly there aren't any hard numbers. In general, women are more likely to participate in fandom via fanart and fanfiction compared to men, and places like GC were an attractive way to host your stuff. One reason Area51 is so well preserved is because of female fanfic writers for Star Trek, The X-Files, Xena and - in one case - Who's Line Is It Anyway updating their websites well after everyone else left.

Yahoo ran it for a decade after buying it off, but it's hard to justify their decision to kill it. GC was still in the 3,000 ranks on Alexa, and it's not like it was costing them a ton of money to host it - assuming GC's size peaked at 15 TB, it would have cost around $5,000 in 2009 to store it + multiple backups. and around $1,000 now. Plus these sites were designed for dialup, minimizing bandwidth - it's why Angelfire and Tripod are still limping along

Maybe they were embarrassed by GC's existence, or some higher-up wanted to look busy by killing a branch of the business that was insufficiently profitable. They pulled this shit again last year by killing Yahoo Answers on short notice.

> significant women on geocities
> fandom via fanart and fanfiction
That's a subniche of a niche. Yes, women have always been on the internet, but arguably they had their own "spaces" within it. I was making a larger point about the internet in general.

When women first enter a male space, they are marginalized--meaning, they have little to no influence on how things are done and special concessions are not made for them. They tend to not have a problem with it because they understand that they are essentially trespassers. Think the one female tomboy amongst a bunch of guys on the basketball court. She's allowed to play, but the guys aren't going to change their behavior or give her special treatment nor does she expect it--she just wants to shoot hoops.

But, as soon as females are allowed in as a matter of policy, or at least the space is now acknowledged as one of "inclusion" that includes females, things begin degrading. The males, usually policed by white knights and Karens, are required to walk on eggshells and change their behavior as to not offend the females in the group. The males will also start engaging in petty social politics and trying to appear attractive to the females by acting douchey. Picrel is a roughly accurate explanation of the process.

If you've ever been on an exclusively male group, where there are absolutely no females around, such as a hunting trip, you will know that the energy is dramatically different than when even one female is around. A group of male friends and I were shooting targets out in the woods all morning. At one point, one of the guy's girlfriends showed up to drop off some food. As soon as she arrived, the energy completely changed. It was as if we all stopped acting like men and were walking on eggshells like a bunch of domesticated faggots.
