The cover artist for the box art of Megaman 1 had never played the game WHATSOEVER!

Don't know what's the story behind first box art but for MM2, artist actually had no idea what is the game looks like and only received some vague description ("a game about blue man, he's mega and fighting robots with gun in his hand", I presume). He was kinda embarassed to see the actual gameplay and realizes it have a very little in common with his work, decades later.

I guess that was common for the industry in 90's. They hire some artist and tell him to "draw cool shit so we can sell this game" and he have like one screenshot or text description for reference. They did what they could.

You know the tiger lcd game, which I had, actually had megaman using a pistol like the box art. I think the guy at tiger didn't know what the fuck the game was either and just saw the box art, it was hilarious.

The worst thing is they could have sold the game for like 50c less a copy f they'd just reused the Japanese art and not paid for new art. With 35 years of inflation, that amounts to a lot of cash.

Why would it? It was by Rock Man and Rock Man X officail artists. They wouldn't comment on art that wasn't theres.

back then publishers had an obsession with the idea that Americans would get filtered by manga artwork so they couldn't use it. also imagine how much money could have been saved by retaining the original Famicom design instead of that retarded gray brick and its jiggly cartridge slot.

The Famicom was probably too cutesy for American sense of aesthetics and they probably had to redo it to comply with FCC regulations.

The Famicom is ugly as fuck desu. But they real reason Nintendo changed it for the American market is because they didn't want it to look anything like a game console. Hence the weird front-loading design. They both aesthetically pale in comparison to the Twin Famicom however.

The worst thing about it is the actual quality of the art. Up to a point, I'll defend the composition. It's got some interesting things going on with the castle and the palm trees in the backfround. Character inaccuracies are whatever. That's how things were at the time.
The fact that it looks like a teenager drew it is why it's so embarrassing. The off-center helmet. The legs that seem to be bending the wrong way. The weird squat chicken pose that Megaman is doing.

They really ought to give Megaman a fully chrome suit in one of the never games, now that graphics allow for it. You could even have Chrome Man as a boss.

What intrigues me is that the thing behind Dr. Light and Crashman looks like a reference to Bombman's stage, and the area where Megaman and Quickman are standing at looks vaguely like Fireman's stage, so you'd think he actually got a look at least one of the games.

Since nobody has actually explained… the artist got the description for the commission over the phone and finished in an evening. Outside of his suit being yellow and having a squirt gun, it actually isn’t too far removed.

I bet what probably happened is Megaman was facing away from the camera like this in the initial draft, and the artist was asked to change it so you could see his face, and he hastily made the right arm into a left arm.
