I think so. It was a paradigm shift in gaming. It showed that games could have depth and nuance. The lore was heavily saturated with a perfect blend of humor and brutality.

Above all else, I think the limitations of the hardware are what gave the developers so much time to develop the characters of what I’ve just previously described so beautifully. The voice acting is legendary, the story, surreal and all the characters in this tale have a certain charm to them.

I would pay an arm and a leg for them to remake this for the PS5.

Keep all original voice acting.
Keep gritty Dark tone of character/environment design.
Keep mechanics nearly same to original.
Keep codec design the same(2D) while making graphics 3D.

A boy can dream.

Remake cancer should be halted. And a remake without Kojima directing it is pointless anyway.

In pure terms of gameplay, I still can't help that it felt "dated" even back then: the shift to 3D was really underwhelming compared to other franchises. I also belive that something was cut out at the end, since most of the actual game is on disc 1.

While I think it was overrated, it was still good in its own regard. The story in particular was the best out of the entire Metal Gear series: it had depth without being pretentious, it had twists that make sense in retrospect, but which weren't immediately obvious at the beginning, it was somewhat complex, yet understandable, but most importantly, every single character matteted.

No other title in the series combined plot elements so welland that's why the first MGS is the only entry that still has a place in my heart. MG1 and MG2 were too basic, MGS2 was postmodernist nonsense and dunking on the fans (a pathetic practice), MGS3 had some solid points, but was overall less cohesive: many of the characters are just filler. Later entried are off topic, so I won't discuss them.

i don't think they could remake it and do it justice. there's a soul the psx version had that you pretty much can't recapture.

i'd say the biggest flaw with this game is it's too short, and there isn't enough tactical espionage action. thanks to VA and cutscenes, it already spans 2 discs, but i wouldn't mind it spanning 4 if they put the VR levels in the actual game. that would easily take care of this game being too short.

other than that, the game too frequently has you do things that have nothing to do with the core mechanics.

- running up a flight of stairs while either killing dudes or evading gunfire
- a turret sequence
- a repelling sequence
- close quarters combat, before a cqc system was ever made.

these could be adjusted and it would make the game a lot better.

I vehemently disagree. Gen 6 at this point in time is decidedly "retro."
I dare you to present me an example of a game made after 2007 that has similar design philosophies to PS2, Xbox, GameCube and PC games released before December 2007.
I mean that earnestly, too; I would love to be proven wrong.

Yes, of course, it's almost like the second disc didn't have forced backtracking to create rhe illusion of a longer game, nobody could rationally come to the hypothesis that it was rushed, right?

It's fine to like old games, but you're not supposed to argue like the kid you were at the time.

>other than that, the game too frequently has you do things that have nothing to do with the core mechanics.
This is my single biggest problem with most of the Metal Gear franchise, and also some mission-based games such as the GTAs. They don't have a consistent formula to base their challenges on, which prevents the player from improving over time.

While this a hyperbolic comparison, it sometimes feels like a well disguised collection of mini games instead of a single, cohesive game.
