Is it fair or is this peak artificial difficulty?

>> No.8769917

MSC belongs to that "class of '86" bunch of Famicom action platformers along with Castlequest, Transformers, and Adventure Island. These were still early games without real mappers yet (just CNROM which offers some limited ability to swap graphics sets) and are all notoriously cheap and difficult.

I've tried to get into this game on more than one occasion but I always get filtered by how quickly the enemies respawn. I don't even mind how cryptic the game is and in fact that appeals to me, but it's not fun trying to figure out all the vague hints and secret compartments while shit is flying at me every few seconds.

There's no such thing as artificial difficulty

Good summary. When people realized there was a market for gaming beyond arcade games, there were a lot of clumsy attempts at designing what were effectively arcade games that would take weeks or months to complete. Although this situation rapidly improved.

There is a huge gap between Adventure Island and late period MMC3 platformers.

It's got a few too well hidden things there but not that bad really just another victim of AVGN effect

It's got pretty polished audiovisuals against some of those other platformers and the overall game design is more complex and ambitious than AI or Transformers which are generic "run to the right shooting random junk" games.

Who played it better: Retro Game Master or Angry Video Game Nerd?

never watched avgn but this game is trash bruh, they literally took the "bomb every wall, burn every bush" aspect from zelda and were like "let's make an entire game out of this"

The shooting the tiles thing isn't really that bad and usually pretty obvious. The pushable tiles are literally a different color so they're easy af to see once you know about the mechanic.

The real bullshit are keys and other items only appearing if you touch some specific invisible trigger point which typically involves jumping through empty space and since they often spawn offscreen you don't even know when you triggered it.

AVGN makes enough money off his videos why do you need to let him live rent-free in your head?
