Hardest retro games ever thread?

Pic related, if you've played it, especially without a guide, you know. It's Wizardry 4 for those curious.

>> No.947106

i imagine its some sort of crazy shmup on mame

gradius 3, raiden, those impossible to beat cave games. At least as far as action games go

wizardry 4 is generally acknowledged to the most difficult rpg ever made

Wizardry 4 is pretty tough, but most of that is trial and error. Deathlord on the other hand...

It's not like there is much to ruin with filters in such a graphically barren game

I dunno if Dodonpachi is old enough to really be /vr/ material, but damn, reaching the real true ending with 2 loops of the game with 1C is not for mortal beings

If I want to get into a Wizardry game should I start the series at 1 or is there a generally perceived best one of the series.

It's a 4X (As far as I know, it's the first ever 4X)

But unlike say, MOO II, it's a setting where ships are pretty cheap compared to colonies, and even established worlds are very fragile, by midgame, a fleet that took you one turn to produce can destroy a mid-sized colony.

Now, combine that with a movement system that means it takes you several turns to get anywhere, and there's ZERO early warning when an enemy fleet comes in, unless you have a friendly fleet strong enough to face it when it comes in, your colony burns. You can build defense satellites, but they won't break an enemy fleet, they'll probably just kill one or two of their swarming ships.

So the game degenerates into people building up 5-6 fleets that can smash a world, and flinging them at the opponent, hoping to blow up all of their worlds before they blow up all of yours. It's not quite mutually assured destruction, but it's damn close.

And if there's more than one opponent, it becomes hugely luck based, often the winning player being whomever is the last one to go to war and thus has the longest time to spread colonies around before the bombs start dropping.

It's hellish.

So, I'm curious...are we talking about games that are legitimately difficult, or can poor controls/interface come into the equation?

This fits either way, I guess...

Wizardry 4's True Ending requires the player to have an understanding of a specific, modern interpretation of the Hermetic Kabbalah to succeed.

If that isn't fucking wacky, then I don't know what is.

Gradus 3 isn't that hard. Try striker 1945 on mame if you want some real bullet hell. And it's not even the worst I've seen. But it is very very fun and you play as warplanes.

For hard retro games im gonna go chakan on Genesis and super ghosts and ghouls on SNES. Dunno about nes but there are plenty of hard games out there.

Oh god, one my all time fav's. I played through it not long ago, but with save states.

I mean seriously. One shot at the end boss when you're in the golden warpship. Otherwise, surprise! Level 12 all over again. lol. Fuck!

Sounds interesting. I wouldn't call it difficult though, I would call it a weird setting. It is same for every player right? Where do you find others to play against or do you face CPU?

>Gradus 3 isn't that hard

You're thinking of the SNES version. The original arcade version is (in)famous as one of the hardest shooting games ever made.
